About John Rockey

I am an engineer. I mean that in the most precise, and general sense. From an early age, I developed a chronic curiosity and the desire to understand how things work, and why they work the way they do. The same curiosity and desire define who I am to this day. My formal career began in 2005, when I received a BS in Mechanical Engineering; specializing in fluid dynamics, power conversion, and optimization. Immediately after graduation I went to work in Automation and Controls, then Machine Design, then Applied Research, then Analytical Software Development, and lots of other fun stuff. My dad is the worst! My first education was from my father, who could fix anything; a leaky roof, an engine, a circuit board, a phone…anything. I distinctly remember a time, several years into my career, when I was struggling to diagnose a problem with my car (feeling rather capable, technically). I thought through the combustion chemistry, the manifold flow, the injector pulse profile… everything my education taught me; everything I wanted the problem to be. After far too long I asked my dad what he thought. Exactly 2.7 seconds later he said “it’s the coil”, and he was right. ARGH! How?! How did he do that?!? I’d barely finished describing the problem and he’d already solved it. That’s when the value of experience and intuition became aggravatingly clear to me. Experience and intuition are earned by repeatedly trying, failing, trying again, succeeding, and slowly destroying one’s belief in the intractable. Intuition cannot be neatly packaged and conveyed through a textbook. Frankly, that makes it a little irksome, and invaluable.The Value of Successive ApproximationNumerical methods can teach you some life lessons if you stare at the screen long enough. I’ve come to appreciate the power of iteration. I don’t need to know the answer, explicitly, to solve a problem. What I do need to know is where I stand and approximately where I’d like to go. Then, take a step. Any step. MOVE! Follow up with a realistic, honest assessment of how things changed and move again. None of the steps need to be remarkable. If you have the opportunity to burn through a thousand small failures, and you’re able to progress more often than regress, you’re likely to find something amazing. The icing on the cake is getting to a solution and then being able to see all the ways you could be smarter about it the next time. Impose smarter bounds and some clever test logic, then a thousand failures (steps) become 7 or 8.

His vision and intuition are both spot on. My fellow engineer, Alex Nixon, also knows every detail of the machines and how to make them perform. He's like the machine whisperer. In my first week at DMS I noticed the steady parade of people coming to Alex and Armand for solutions, which they seemed to always have, magically queued up and ready. Between the three of us, there was nothing we couldn't do. The rate at which we could formulate ideas, prototype, revise, refactor, and get to a viable, demonstrable product was incredible.We few. We happy few. Serving in the Innovation Department at DMS taught me never to underestimate the power of a small, well formed team. It was truly an honor.

One of the lab tests ( the "Drop Weight Test") was/is used to determine the energy needed to break rocks and subsequently optimize Ball Mill operation. Ball Mills require massive amounts of power, so optimization provides significant savings for their customers. The Drop Weight Test has been a central part of their optimization protocol. Initially, the test was largely manual and the results were unreliable. Often, several tests would have to be performed to produce a single, usable data set. I proposed building an inexpensive programmable motion control system, with high speed data collection. And so it began... As an Engineering Specialist my work included: - Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) Network Design- Project Management- Coordinating and Supervising Installation by Electrical Subcontractors- Controller Programming- Commissioning - Customer Training- Technical SupportNotable Project: Siemens developed a reputation at Langley AFB as the company who could make things work, and keep them working. I was given the opportunity to integrate a large set of backup generators into the base-wide Siemens SCADA system. This project involved integrating various generator control systems (CAT, Generac, Kohler, erc) using ModBus and other translation protocols. I developed a custom GUI for the Langley Facilities Management team, which enabled them to remotely startup the generators and run diagnostic tests. The routine diagnostic procedure had previously taken hours of driving around the base and performing the tests manually. With the new system in place, the routine diagnostics could be done in minutes from the comfort of the main control room. What I loved most about Siemens: Siemens strongly encouraged full project ownership. My supervisor taught me not to hesitate when something didn't follow the plan. If you need to make a voltage divider, then make a voltage divider. If you need to run to Granger and buy a tool, then buy the tool. Siemens also provided a wealth of training and learning opportunities.
