Over the 2013 summer, I had the extraordinary opportunity to contribute to an environmentally self-sustaining ecolodge/intentional community, Rancho Margot, through their Volunteer Work Exchange program. Rancho Margot is one of the few establishments in Costa Rica to have achieved a five-leaf rating through Costa Rica's Certificate for Sustainable Tourism, measuring not only earth friendly practices in and around the facilities, but facets like socioeconomic contribution and education as well. During my stay I worked with other volunteers from across the world in addition to Rancho's staff, to create an impactful and educational stay for guests of the ranch. Some of the takeaways and experience from my adventure include:- Working in a community based environment focused on teamwork and accountability- Exposure and increased understanding of hospitality-focused business- Autonomy of required tasks, leveraging self-motivation and leadership- Acquisition of basic level Spanish through real-world exposure and interaction- Sustainable/organic agriculture and permaculture knowledge through my work-trade exchange in an international community environment- Stimulated independence, problem solving and individual growth - Project management skills in various volunteer coordinated tasks

- Worked in a Mycotoxin Lab which provides deoxynivalenol and related mycotoxin diagnostic services for fusarium head blight research projects using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.- Was responsible for training and supervising new employees on proper and precise lab technique- Monitored inventory levels to optimize efficient replenishment schedule - Created instructional/technical materials to ensure correct execution of procedures and equipment usage
