Us Citizenship TutorSouth East Asia Center Jul 2011 - PresentSouth-East Asia CenterI tutor for the US citizenship exam. I have had four students; three of these have passed. The third stopped the tutoring sessions a short time before the date of his exam but will have easily passed. The first two had already passed the written part when they began with me but had trouble with the verbal (oral) part. The next two had not taken any part but one has already passed and the next one will next week. I have also taken a seminar in "The Language Experience Approach" which covers the writing of English. I have greatly enjoyed this experience and have learned much from them then they have from me. I believe this is very often the case. It has certainly been my experience; both as an instructor in military training and in teaching high school.

General Manager, PresidentNeighborhood Improvement Corporation, Inc Aug 1959 - Dec 1988Chicago, IllinoisNeighborhood Improvement Corp was started by my father; Witt, who was a community organizer. He worked in a number of areas in the city, but his primarily focus was Lawndale, on the west side, working with the Church Federation. His primary intention was to obtain employment. It needed to be easy to obtain and reach the jobs that existed in the near north west suburbs. There were many difficulties that those who had fairly recently come up from the deep south encountered in seeking, obtaining and getting to jobs that existed beyond the reach of public transportation. An office on 16th street was set up where you could go to apply. Many did not have the resources or the knowledge that was needed for a metropolitan area to obtain a job. These offices were staffed and supervised by members of churches in Lawndale. Applicants were taken out for interviews and generally got a job. Daily transportation was provided, the cost was born by the employer. Transportation was 24/7 as most of the jobs were on the late afternoon or night shift. I became involved with this early as I was at the U of I - Chicago and then at National College for an advanced degree. I had friends who were already teaching. They knew I had buses. The suggestion was that since they were not being used during most of the school day that we could provide for field trips at a reasonable cost. This began small but rapidly grew. It became the larger part of what we did and became even more as CTA and Pace moved out and took over the most lucrative routes. Also many of the people who originally needed transportation got cars. I continued to provide field trip service and moved into wheelchair trips for nursing homes and then for Anixter Center. By this time my father was gone. In 1988, I changed the name to NIC Transit. When most funding began to come from the state, prompt payment ceased and when we were out beyond 90 days, only the bank keep us going. Eventually we were unable to continue to operate - 1964.

Team Member With Primary Duty As Team Yeoman, Supply Specialist And Military TrainerUs Navy - Seabee Technical Assistance Team (Stat 7-2) Aug 1962 - Jun 1965Davisville, Ri And Camp Lejeune NcSTAT 7-2 was one of two Special Teams (Atlantic) with 10 to 12 members formed in 1962 to support 2 or 3 Special Force Teams operating for more extended periods in the Field. Our primary responsibility was construction and community development in those areas where SOG Teams had forward bases. All members were E-5 and above, had to have two trades and be competent in two others and be selected by the team commander.. We received special training in numerous areas, both construction and military. We did tours in West Africa, Scotland, Camp David, Cuba and Camp LeJeune. I was originally a steelworker and Yeoman and then crossed trained as a corpsman. I also received training in heavy equipment operation, electrical installation, plumbing, Butler Buildings, road paving (Barber Greene) and I was sent to Marine Corp Instructor School for instruction in US history, foreign policy, and the teaching of tactics and strategy. We were sent as a team to Marine Corp ITR training on two separate occasions for extended periods and attached to various marines units for additional training ( AO, Amphibious, Recon, etc). We did small arms firing on a weekly basis with our weapons (38, 45, shotgun, BAR, M-1, AR-15 and others. In addition we trained with NATO weapons and Iron Curtain weapons. We were also instructed on heavy artillery and calling in air support We spent a period operating with the Marines on the Boxer for amp assault. We spent time with ROC army people, Seals and an Air force rescue team. We were additionally trained and certified (but no Fort Bragg - too expensive) for air drop practice with our equipment from a C-130. But the most challenging school we went to was SERE at Pickle Meadows. This was the single most intense experience of my life. Our team began to be broken up in 1964 as individual members were sent to a deteriorating situation in Viet Nam. This was just before we were deployed to West Africa. I ended my active duty at the end of May 1965.
