Developing new technology to improve health care everywhere. My career to date has alternated between service and academic microbiology in the UK, Nigeria and Vietnam. My current post, research leader at the Quadram Institute is focussed on translational research on Microbes in the Food Chain. My own research group is (2023) working on metabolic nodelling of bacterial genomes and metagenomes. I am supporting Dipali Singh to improve the use of AI in the Biosciences andwe have projects in collaboration with Oxford-Brookes University (Mark Poolman). Through JIDC we are pushing the use of AI in research in developing countries. . In the past I have: designed and delivered a teaching programme for public health and clinical microbiology in Nigeria; setup microbiology research in Vietnam with the Wellcome Trust; established and run a research group on antimicobi resistance at the Sanger Institute; and directed for three years the HPA's Gastrointestinal Reference Laboratory at Colindale (now Public Health England's GBRU). My research has informed the treatment of tyhpoid fever; linked antibiotic resistance and virulence in Salmonella; paved the way for the first Salmonella to be genome sequenced; produced high throughput genetic techniques for typing Salmonella (MLST); generated genomic methods for screening gene function and regulation in host adapted bacterial pathogens (TraDIS); and defined the parameters for the routine use of whole genome sequencing in public health microbiology. I have taken two SMEs from startup to exit and I am a director of two others. My main interest now is in the use of new health technologies in countries with developing economies. Gemma Langridge and I have set up JIDCuk CIC to support scientists to study and set up research groups in low income countries.
