Design Engineer

Leighton Buzzard

Joined the aftermarket engineering team at Leighton Buzzard in late 2019 and swiftly began developing and leading new aftermarket processes in consultation with the certification department to launch major DOA projects for Collins. My work is chiefly dedicated to developing and supporting aftermarket (in-service) projects for galleys onboard the Airbus A350. This includes high value engineering work for a number of prestigious airlines which have been looking for fleet renewal, aircraft reconfiguration and rebranding.I also support technical requests and investigations as required, and provide close-in support and training for engineers and management to ensure robust handling of activities during the pandemic.I’ve also sought to quickly address a large backlog of SB’s and technical issues which had accrued over previous years; to allow our department to focus on profitable future work and to advance our services and business relationship with Airbus. With a strong focus and a committed and talented team, we have accelerated our team within the services division to the forefront of Airbus’s ratings as a major supplier during the pandemic using our specialist and flexible skills.

Oct 2019 - Dec 2021

Design Engineer

Brackley

Following work as a design and development unit, our unit was shifted to support aftermarket activities. In this domain we applied our wide range of knowledge and experience to solve in-service technical issues across the seat / suite product line. This included visits to our customer’s aircraft and hangers to conduct inspections and support investigations to give close-in support.During this period I trained multiple engineers and supporting staff and provided a framework to solve demanding, time and sensitive certification in-service issues for airlines, with custom made solutions.Furthermore, I conducted reliability engineering analysis for in-service seats to establish scheduled maintenance and spares as part of a major service package for Virgin Atlantic. These initiatives and supporting functions we provided brought growth within the aftermarket unit and lead to profit margins in excess of seventy percent.

Dec 2018 - Oct 2019

Design Engineer

Brackley

Transferred to Design engineer role as Zodiac did not recognise Project Engineering. As Design Engineer my first task was to support recovery of a delayed programme providing close support to the production line for a business class programme for Etihad Airways. As part of our site integration we relocated to a new building and to support this I generated detailed models and drawings including floor plans, furniture, equipment, test rigs and facilities.Following a stint of several months in a design liaison and support role, I began design and development work on a new premium economy seat platform which was later selected by Singapore Airlines for the Airbus A350-900 ULR. This role included writing detailed design specifications; design and development work on innovative kinematic systems and configuration control (LOPA’s). My experience as a project engineer, especially with environmental testing and my work to introduce advanced polymers was useful for kinematic and bearing parts. This helped to create fluid and effective motion systems with high performance characteristics. Additionally I wrote product quality and acceptance documents to raise the bar for our products for Singapore Airlines. The prototype and development seats were well received from the industry following their showing at the Aircraft interiors shows (AIX Hamburg).

Jan 2015 - Dec 2018

Project Engineer

Brackley

To summarise I delivered the following as Project Engineer:• Technical support of seating projects, working with suppliers to ensure product delivery and functionality to specification.• Supporting the airline for technical in-service faults and problems, including updating Component Maintenance Manuals (CMM’s).• Working internally and externally with customers and suppliers to deliver airline requirements.• Working in conjunction with Design and Engineering to coordinate the development process through prototyping and indicative testing to develop systems and parts. • Generation of test plans and reports• Working within a multi-functioning Design and Engineering team to find creative solutions while meeting challenging deadlines and project constraints.• Creating and developing test set-ups that replicate passenger interactions with seats, where necessary pioneering unique setups tailored to specific problems.• Liaising with airframe manufacturers, suppliers and customers to ensure documentation is produced to the required standards.• Liaising with and supporting Design and Project Management with technical input and system ownership.• Organisation and oversight of cyclic (reliability) and abuse (durability) testing.

Jun 2013 - Dec 2014

Project Engineer

Brackley, Northamptonshire

Employed as project engineer within the Development & Certification department of Threesixty Aerospace, assigned to delivering Virgin Atlantic’s premium economy seating for the Boeing 787-9. Among my various engineering contributions, I developed a Design Verification Plan (DVP) which covered test planning required for delivering and certifying the Boeing project but also incorporated budget data for tracking department spending. It also identified key development requirements for investigation and improvement to meet the expectations and requirements of Virgin Atlantic. The DVP was structured in a way that allowed for sequential ordering of tests which could then be managed based on the availability of the test rigs, equipment and external facilities.

May 2012 - Jun 2013

Support Engineer

Moog

Wolverhampton, United Kingdom

Completed a nine month contract for Moog Aerospace as a supporting engineer to aftermarket operations. Quickly and successfully integrated into an experienced department of the company. This role consisted of working to improve operational efficiency and maintain workflow in engineering aftermarket operations. The role’s functions included support of workshop queries and issues, investigating problems identified in service and identifying causes and finding solutions. Updating and reviewing the Component Maintenance Manual’s (CMM) and Bills of Materials (BoM) was also required and constant reviews were made of the long term requirements of Moog’s vendors. Several assignments were undertaken to meet the company’s changing strategy and focus on Military operations work for the transfer of operations to a new facility.Applications of this work include the creation and development of analysis spreadsheets for forecasting future demand of repaired parts. This allowed Moog to deliver its financial objectives in regards to profitability from detail reviews of Lead time and Cost reduction opportunities through analysing parts usage, Moog’s routings system and with discussion and collaboration with all technical and management levels. This information was analysed in spreadsheets and written into detailed reports for evaluating cost effectiveness of Moog’s high value work in commercial and military aftermarket operations. Meetings and operational strategies were conducted at a senior level, with co-ordination with the aftermarket engineering and workshop teams to discuss the implementation of changes to our repair operations. This was finalised using Moog’s Business System data input software. The analysed annual savings of this personal work and their implemented changes is detailed at half a million pounds and has been appraised by Moog’s worldwide headquarters directly.
