Initially employed as a labourer I worked my way through being a qualified explosives engineer in the lime stone quarries and ultimately finishing as the quarry production manager in Birchover, Derbyshire responsible for the production of gritstone for use in the building industry. Duties included management of quarry operations, H&S, budgetary management.

Joined from school aged 17 promoted to leading weapons engineer at 19. Responsible for maintenance of weapons, sonar and communications systems on Naval warships. Also responsible for the welfare and conduct of junior ratings.
