I work in a developmental biology lab, with a Principal Investigator who is a paleontologist. The two disciplines intertwine well, but practically speaking it means we have a lot going on around the lab. I do a little bit of everything.Lab Management- Facilitate all day-to-day processes of the lab including administrative tasks, purchasing, and maintenance in order to preserve a highly organized and efficient lab.- Manage use and care of lab facilities by others by scheduling and training of new lab members, undergraduates, and volunteers.- Coordinate and oversee the continuous certification and compliance of the lab’s numerous animal care and use protocols as well as lab facilities.Design, Graphics, and Illustration- Compose illustrations, graphics, and diagrams to present and enhance the impact of data produced by the lab for publications and presentations.- Self-taught expert in Adobe Creative Suite and Wacom tablet.- Audited graduate level course in scientific illustration at the University of Chicago.- Invited to co-lead a seminar on graphics and scientific illustration for young researchers looking to improve their data presentation in publications.- Published artist with artwork and images in over 15 articles, reviews, and book chapters.Collaboration and Communication- Collaborate with colleagues, from concept to final proof-read, on the preparation of manuscripts for peer review and publication.- Effectively communicate, alongside lab members, with external researchers during regular meetings in order to review data and evaluate current scientific literature.- Serve as gateway to the lab and its Principal Investigator; screening correspondence, scheduling appointments, conducting lab business in rights and permissions.

Facilitated the daily operations of a molecular biology laboratory, including stocking and organizing; performed a variety of molecular techniques, from PCR and gel electrophoresis to cloning to ChIP-seq; performed transgenesis experiments (microinjection of transgene vectors into embryos) on zebrafish.
