At the Forest Products Laboratory, where I was a Project Leader for a 15 to 20 person composite products research team, we had great autonomy to plan and organize research programs that promised a maximum payoff for the resources committed. My job involved conducting research on new technologies, processes and products from wood and woody biomass. In this position, I was involved in: 1) recruiting, hiring and mentoring scientists, support personnel, graduate students and visiting scientists from all parts of the world, 2) developing detailed plans and work teams for research studies, 3) coordinating with other research projects within our laboratory and with other national and international university and industry research leaders, and, 4) communicating with university professors, industry research leaders, and the general public. Writing and publishing our research results were essential to the successful completion of a research program. Through all of these work projects, developing, mentoring and guiding people was critical to accomplishing our objectives. Ethics and personal integrity continue to be integral parts of my career as a professional engineer, a manager and a consultant. Writing and communications skills are critical to publishing our results and communicating to scientists, engineers, business professionals and the general public. These criteria continue to be essential elements of the projects I complete today.

At the Ray-O-Vac Corporation, I was a researcher, a research manager and I supervised a complicated battery manufacturing operation that required us to employ extreme quality control procedures to insure that the battery products we made were uncontaminated and were produced to very tight standards. These batteries were used in implanted pacemakers and hearing devices that were in the human body. We conducted chemical and physical tests in supplier’s facilities before their materials were shipped to our facilities and their products were not allowed into our plant until they passed our QC procedures conducted at their facilities. I feel that this experience can be easily translated to other fields, and particularly in healthcare, medical product manufacturing, and in general, complicated product manufacturing scenarios.Ethics and personal integrity continue to be integral parts of my career as a professional engineer, a manager and a consultant.
