I worked in the plant engineering section of the Facilities and Engineering Department. We were responsible for keeping the utilities that supported pharmaceutical manufacturing running. These included Water for Injection, HVAC, Plant and Pure Steam, Oil-Free Compressed Air (OFCA), Pharmaceutical Caustic, and Lab Water. Some of my projects included developing preventative maintenance schedules, developing inspection contracts, collecting and analyzing temperature data on equipment, and designing a more efficient and safer caustic storage and distribution system. Other vital skills learned were asking questions, collaboration, and interpersonal communication in a business setting. I also learned about the regulation environment in pharmaceutical manufacturing and things we do to comply, such as good manufactuing practices (GMP) and good documentation practices (GDP). I also learned about 6sigma and even earned a Yellow-Belt Certification during this internship. Through shadowing and 1:1's, I learned about the purification process in antibody manufactering; particularly the different types of chromatography and how they work. I also learned the basics of the scale-up and tech tranfer processes, investigations, formulations, roles of a bioprocess engineer, and cell-line development.

I was a liaison between the Confucius Institute, the University of Tennessee and the local community.
