Senior Quality Engineer

Elgin, Illinois, Us

Customer and supplier quality technical issues occasionally arose in the factory and assembly areas, and I evaluated and troubleshot them, which was then used to drive manufacturing partners to improve their processes and decrease defect rate. There are occasions where a product has a defect or customers want to modify a part for their particular application. I processed customer requests for RMA returns, utilizing the NetSuite ERP system, evaluating and troubleshooting returned product, and writing failure analysis reports for customers.Environmental compliance is important to customers throughout the world, and the Quality department is responsible for ensuring our products comply to various standards. I processed customer requests for RoHS, REACh, and CMRT certificates of compliance for company products, keeping abreast of the current standards.

Electronics Quality Engineer

Palatine, Illinois, Us

This was a newly-created position to support the electronics quality for a recent business venture, requiring creation of a Quality Assurance lab electronics test bench, and root cause analysis of factory defects and field failures.• There was no established means of tracking supplier or assembly defects in the factory, and therefore I researched, created and implemented a factory defect tracking system to record product data, improving the efficiency of Non-Conformance Report (NCR) turnaround – a first for the company. I collaborated with IT to implement an application for a tablet device, train factory workers, and monitor/improve process performance.• I worked in collaboration with R&D and Product Management to create the VoC, Product Reqs., Engineering Specs., DFMEA, and CTQs, creating the structure (in Excel) to synchronize them and the traceability between these deliverables and inputs from multiple sources. This was a first for the company, and is currently the Weber standard for capturing and tracing critical requirements.• When hardware or software updates were needed in the factory, I created multiple rework procedures and PowerPoint slides for factory personnel to explain software updates and packaging changes for several electronic devices prior to shipment.

Quality Engineer

Burlington, Wi, Us

I collaborated daily with manufacturing engineers, analyzing returned field failures and preparing failure analysis reports for the customer, and implementing corrective action reports (CARs) and preventative action reports (PARs).I improved the monitoring of two Mydata pick-and-place machine yields, and created an Excel-based tracking and statistics tool, revealing root cause component placement failures. The efforts resulted in improved machine maintenance, and reduced operator frustration.I developed a Moisture Sensitive Device tracking system for the factory, based on IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033D. An Excel-based time-tracking tool and bake calculator was created, utilizing temperature / %RH data loggers to sense dry box and ambient conditions, eliminating the "popcorn" effect created when components exceed their accumulated floor life, preventing manufacturing waste and latent failures. When there was a need for schematics for products to be created, I researched electronic design automation (EDA) software packages, selected OrCAD, and independently trained myself, creating the schematics and a PCB layout for a rotary encoder – a first for the company. I also used OrCAD to capture schematics of various crystal-based oscillator NEL products – another first for the company.

Apr 2018 - Jan 2020

Research And Development Electrical Engineer

Opus Rf Solutions Consulting

I provided well-researched and analytical solutions to technical problems for a client in the commercial HVAC controls industry, who needed a method to perform calculations and curve-fitting in a reliable, repeatable manner, using standard office software (i.e. Excel). The spreadsheet tools enabled the client's sales personnel to accurately estimate savings customers would obtain by implementing their energy management strategy. The client knew the technical side of things but did not know how to simplify the results for non-engineers, and communicate it. I liked this work because it gave me an opportunity to take technical information and share it with non-technical professionals.

Feb 2015 - Mar 2018

Principal Staff Engineer

Chicago, Il, Us

I researched, designed, developed, and tested various aspects of public-safety Base and Land Mobile Radio products, including receivers (RX), RF Distribution Systems, and Transmitters (TX). I performed various analyses, circuit and receiver and transmitter lineup optimizations, and PCB layout work, performed using the Keysight ADS simulation tool and custom Excel spreadsheet tools. As a receiver architect, I determined board-level requirements, and used DOORS to generate block requirements and test plan documents for each design engineer on the team.I provided technical leadership and Keysight ADS modeling training to a Motorola Solutions design center in Penang, Malaysia for 3 weeks, enabling their engineers to immediately increase their modeling capabilities, including statistical analysis (Monte Carlo) and yield optimization, while also improving product quality.I actively collaborated with an internal product group, creating requirements and designing a directional coupler block for the power control system for a premier, 50W VHF base radio, using custom-made Excel spreadsheet tools, and ADS Momentum and Optimization. I independently authored several architectural technical summary reports, which were then endorsed by my colleagues, and considered the new standard/template for architectural reports in the department.

2006 - 2014 ~8 yrs

Principal Staff Engineer, Applied Technology Department

Chicago, Illinois, Us

I simulated, optimized, created schematics and PCB layout, and prototyped sections of a low volume, QPSK repeater , including a 2W, class AB amplifier, low noise amplifiers (MMIC), LC filters, and PLL.In the process, I reduced manufacturing time and product quality by improving the connector/board interface using a board-mounted connector.

2004 - 2006 ~2 yrs

Principal Staff Engineer, Gtss Bts Design Center

Chicago, Illinois, Us

I served as the technical lead engineer on a next-generation transceiver design for a 2-way public-safety transceiver, quickly learned Mentor Graphics schematic capture tool, and created all receiver-level schematics.• Using a new researched technique in the department, I designed a N-way Wilkinson splitter for a diversity receiver.• Because short-term engineering head-count was needed for the project, I coordinated design efforts with an internal design group in Chandler, AZ.• While mentoring a younger engineer, I resolved Maintenance-of-Line (MOL) issues in the factory, enabling continued production or eliminating field failures.

2003 - 2004 ~1 yr

Senior Staff Engineer, Gtss Bts Design Center

Chicago, Illinois, Us

This was the most exciting projects I worked on at Motorola Solutions. A vendor was selling Motorola their custom-designed duplexer for the 800MHz band, and Motorola was seeking to reduce product cost. Because the vendor would not reduce the cost, I was was asked to research, design, and lead development of an internally-designed 800 MHz duplexer filter and power meter for a RF Distribution System. Having no prior duplexer or comb-line filter design experience, this project required me to utilize RF design techniques, mechanical design, and metallurgy, and created my own mechanical prototypes on machining tools.Prior to the duplexer project, the current receiver local oscillator voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) required 4 different designs and bills of materials. I was asked to research, conceptualize, design, and develop a wide-bandwidth VCO for the UHF (350-524MHz) and 7/800MHz ranges, while maintaining high performance specifications. • I reduced the number of VCO individual designs and bill of materials from 4 to 1, saving Motorola $3M in manufacturing costs.• I created a factory-ready duplexer, and accompanying Schottky diode-based power monitor, reducing purchasing costs by 1/3, resulting in $70M savings. •I led a team, consisting of a mechanical designer and 2 junior engineers, in development of a duplexer.
