I worked at FDO for a short time. In that time I made significant improvements to their process, cutting out several performance bottlenecks in their high frequency trading and reporting engine, and I taught many of my teammates automation techniques that cut hours of manual work out of their day. I learned from them that sometimes the graphical presentation of data and your ability to visually scan it can be significantly more valuable than a spreadsheet full of numbers and complicated formulas. We both learned that maintenance work for fast code that finishes quickly is significantly easier than debugging and upgrading processes that take forever.

Acquired the necessary information to get a CD professionally built and uploaded to iTunes in the mid-2000s. Financed the release and production for the first two CDs from a favorite local Boise band. Performed in a live show as the drummer.

Was the only person at DESCO during that time period who did manual trading during the day and wore the programmer hat at night.Maintained all of the scripts supporting operations and data collection for the Fixed Income Trading strategy from 2001-2005.Financed the U.S. Treasuries portfolio as the head repo trader from 2002-2004, moving around tens of billions of dollars every week.Assumed the role as the head buyer and seller of U.S. Treasuries from 2004-2005, executing relative value and bond basis trades hedged with futures and options.Watched the guy next to me buy 5-year Credit Default Swaps in 2003 covering several of the banks that failed 4.9 to 5.1 years after the trade.Ate a disturbing number of sandwiches.
