Original research into human language and other complex phenomena, especially using advanced statistical and machine learning techniques. Manage small focused teams on multi-year projects, both internal R&D and externally funded. Develop prototype software applications. Frequent consultant to diverse projects on human language technology, statistical machine learning, and crowdsourcing. Highlights include:• Proposed and led six-year research program investigating automatic techniques for predicting latent author attributes, such as gender, age, geographic affiliation, birth language. Resulted in multiple publications, technology licensing, and a patent.• Proposed and led four-year research project on domain adaptation for statistical machine learning systems, focusing on improving MT for science and technology areas such as microelectronics, biomedicine and cybersecurity. Resulted in publications, and a number of data resources transitioned to the broader machine translation community.• Proposed and executed a series of crowdsourcing-related projects, including the development of sophisticated workflows and software to support the use of crowds in place of expert annotators. Resulted in several publications, and the wider adoption of crowdsourcing approaches across the company, including external projects.
