Joined to engage in a turnaround of the company which at this writing (3/2014) has gone very well- received the annual Achievement Award from an invested fund 2013, expanded focus into higher end instruments as well as expanded geographies: China, Taiwan, Etc and expanded European distribution as well. Senior Technology Transfer And Commercialization Engineer
Strategic advisor on new technology commercialization / business development. Responsibilities included financial comparisons and feasibility analysis of new product opportunities, materials and production process selections, technology transfer / licensing, business planning, enterprise formation, joint ventures, technical product sales management, strategic marketing, intellectual property, and access to capital. Significant activities in networking clients to resources at Federal Laboratories and to licensing Federal Laboratory technologies to clients. Key role in supporting MEP's relationship with the Maine Technology Institute, a state funded grant making organization focused on funding innovative R & D with clear plans for commercialization. This relationship resulted in $5m in annual transactions through MEP and numerous follow on business development contracts with MTI grantee companies. Also assisted in cross selling other MEP programs including LEAN, ISO, GMP and Supply Chain Management. Consistently exceeded key performance metrics, received top level raises and bonuses. Departed under excellent terms (with an invitation to return) to join an MEP client. (see Enercon above).
General Manager
Total enterprise management position in a high tech medical equipment startup based upon technology transfer from Harvard Medical School's Wellman Laboratories, the largest medical laser research facility in the world. Position included feasibility analysis, new product concepts, guidance of DFM (design for manufacture) as well as "price point back" value engineering to accomplish cost of products from manufacturer which would allow business plan generated retail product price points. Syris's number one mission was to sell product, and direct management of the sales force as well as personally selling key OEM's was a focal point of this position. Part of this thrust was worldwide distribution channel building including managers in Europe and the Middle East. Facilitated new product evaluation though efficacy analysis with world leading Physicians; intellectual property administration (patents and trademarks, domestic and international), full financial responsibilities including management of dangerous (yet successful) heavily front loaded marketing expenses of a startup which pioneered a new product sector. Took this unique product development and marketing company from 1 part time employee to 6 full time employees, 3 contract engineers, and worldwide distribution and name recognition with 25% in foreign sales and a solid pretax profit which exceeded plan. Syris contracted manufacturing and the majority of engineering development to Enercon Technologies, thus minimizing staffing in house. Syris web site: syrisscientific.com. The majority of Syris was sold to Enercon in May 2000.

Clients included University Professors (Princeton, Harvard Medical), automated machinery builders, a specialty motorcycle manufacturer, snow board manufacturers, patent attorneys and others. Services included technical product marketing as well as design and intellectual property protection. Operated the State of Maine Patent Assistance Program (as a contractor) which successfully funded several high tech patents for commercialization in Maine, and led to formation of a full program with two patent and one trademark attorneys .

Duties included niche market identification, product development for these niches, customer interfacing, statistical quality analysis of past and present products to affect future upgrades as well as new product roll out management. Initiated and managed major new business area in combat training systems with U.S. Army Training Command. Also involved as P.E.

. Taught second semester students the principles of proper engineering document preparation and communication, including geometric tolerances, view layouts and ANSI conventions, as well as many practical "design for manufacturability" lessons.

Full responsibility for yacht at sea during watches, systems maintenance, upgrading and spares inventory on a 120 ft, $7million corporate sailing yacht equipped with several systems as well as rigging designed by myself while at Navtec. Navtec was a $7m company at the time which designed and manufactured zero leakage 5000 and 7500 psi hydraulic systems as well as mast support (standing) rigging and instrumentation products used on large high performance yachts, including 100+ ft. cruising yachts and America's Cup class racers. Responsibilities included new product development and feasibility studies, technology transfer and technical oversight of advertising for Navtec's products as well as technical sales support to leading Naval Architects worldwide. Full responsibility for group of six engineers, including budgetary and re-staffing responsibilities following corporate move in which half of department left company. Implemented FEA (finite element stress analysis), computer based cyclic fatigue testing (both industry firsts), revised computer networking and data archiving procedures. Brought out new products at more than twice the previously achieved rate. Actively designed many custom and new production rigging and hydraulic systems as well as fulfilling management duties.
