John founded McCulley Design Group (renamed McCulley Design Lab) in 1988 to blend the disciplines of building design, interior design, and branding. McCulley has created and executed strategic programs that defined and substantiated clients’ position in the marketplace through corporate identity, environments, visual communication and brand strategy programs. In 1984 McCulley was hired to create Richardson Smith's Retail and Environments Design Division. As Senior Design Director, he grew the division to be one of the Top 10 Retail Design firms in the USA. John was responsible for Design Strategy and Brand Development for Next Generation Concepts for Bank One, Chriscraft, Regal Yachts, Trojan Boats, and a variety of national retail enterprises. Richardson Smith merged with London based Fitch in 1988.

Assistant Professor in the Industrial Design Department. Taught undergraduate courses in : Graphic Design, Product Design and Interior Space.

Industrial Design Department Chair (for current Chair who was on Sabbatical). Taught Product Design and chaired department.

Design Instructor for the Fine and Applied Arts College and a Teaching Assistant for the Undergraduate curriculum within the Industrial Design Department. In 1979 John was voted by the student population as "One of the Top Ten Educators on Campus".
