Over my 20 year career, I’ve arrived at one conclusion– I want to lead a team of passionate, talented and diverse humans who WANT to come to work and solve intellectually challenging problems. If those problems also disrupt outdated industries AND help make the world a better place…that’s my nirvana.I have a natural gift at unlocking hidden talents and genius within people and fostering the critical mix of curiosity, trust, creativity and vulnerability that makes the teams I lead so much greater than the sum of their parts. I have an insatiable curiosity that drives my perpetual search to learn new things and question the status quo. For this reason, I’ve worked at all levels of software development- from BA, to developer, to Architect, to CTO to Founder of my own company. Never wanting to be bored, I have accepted roles and projects working on a wide-range of products from internet poker to bowling to enterprise web-content management to building a bitcoin mine. I have experience offering tier 1 customer service support to pitching, funding and leading my own department and fundraising new opportunities from scratch.Through it all, I’ve realized, it matters less what I’m building, but who I’m building it with and that the product we launch solves a real problem for the people or industries it is meant to serve. My endless desire to create and build is grounded by my passion for efficiency, continuous improvement, and people development. That’s why I started Digital Carpenters– to apply my 20 years of experience in Agile development and a leader of large-scale digital transformation to bring continuous improvement to viable opportunities in an industry that needs it.Could your industry or team benefit from some digital transformation? Do you crave tools and solutions to help you work smarter and eliminate waste? Message me and let’s learn more.

Agile Coach & Digital Delivery LeadZebra Technologies Mar 2015 - Mar 2017Lincolnshire, Il*My Zebra story reads best chronologically*Having taken notice of my success in building a new digital team and work culture, senior leadership and the Board of Directors decided to expand my focus to Agile and Digital Transformation efforts. In this role, under the mentorship of the CIO, I worked to modernize the IT delivery processes and introduce agility to the organization. We focused on three main areas to enable this monumental change management effort: culture, Scrum training, and tools. Through this evolution, I developed a sixth sense for the right amount of process for any given task and how to pivot when signs of change fatigue begin to set in.Meanwhile, Zebra’s $4B acquisition of the enterprise business from Motorola Solutions fueled a series of large-scale integration projects that spanned multiple organizations and introduced new heights of risk and complexity. Our leadership chose to apply the agile concepts and models I developed to these challenging efforts. This included changes to how projects are executed, staffed, and funded.- Managed the $7.5M portfolio of digital integration projects including merging Motorola’s customer portals, service experience, product content, and over 10,000 downloadable support items.- Used our agile model to reduce overhead and save over $1M from initial cost estimates across the portfolio.- Created a new funding model to mimic the spirit of Shark Tank.- Led a team of 60+ developers, content specialists, user experience gurus, and business SMEs.- Built the foundational digital product api.zebra.com to enable Zebra's SOA architecture, provide analytics on the most important business processes, and consolidate the ecosystem.- Coached both IT and the business to redefine their partnership and created cross-functional Scrum teams to support operations. -
Senior Manager, Web & Digital StrategyZebra Technologies Oct 2012 - Mar 2015Lincolnshire, IlAfter the successful website launch demonstrated the efficacy of my vision for the web and digital team, I was promoted to senior manager and was provided a hefty budget to officially revamp and grow the team. Within a year, supported by the CMO, I nearly tripled the team size and disrupted Zebra's conservative corporate cultural via several transformative changes: a new open workspace broke down traditional organizational silos (along with physical cubicles, a la Office Space) and fostered collaboration for cross functional teams, implementation of agile principles enabled us to respond to change much more quickly, and an entrepreneurial, startup culture that spurred a change across the organization. This proved to be an invaluable learning experience with respect to quickly scaling a team while maintaining a clear, data-driven ROI for executives.- Enhanced development size and capability while creating new functions on the team for analytics, UX, and DevOps.- Managed the full Marchitecture and developed a suite of internal digital products for Marketing, Sales, and Service teams.- Extended our physical product development into the digital by partnering with Hardware Engineering teams.- Created the foundation for the enterprise’s digital ecosystem. -
Manager, Web Strategy And ServicesZebra Technologies Mar 2011 - Oct 2012Vernon Hills, IlSoon after joining Zebra, I was asked to fill the vacancy left by my recent hiring manager and lead the four-person web team. My main objective was to fund the new website and move it into execution. My secondary objective was to recreate the team and refocus the vision from web support to a strategic digital partner for the business. I led the successful relaunching of the website on an entirely new platform, enabling fundamental improvements with respect to people and process: We decentralized many support activities, freeing people to define our evolving digital strategy and prevent potential roadblocks. This process involved immense change management and influence over the impacted teams.- Managed $1.5M in spending to successfully launch the website on time and enable the team's transformation.- Translated the site into three different languages, significantly increasing how long visitors from those countries stayed on the site and decreasing support costs as they became able to self-serve.- Hired interns to assist in developing fledgling areas of the team at no cost and prove the model worked.- Introduced Agile development methodologies to the team. -
Web Solutions ArchitectZebra Technologies Oct 2010 - Mar 2011Lincolnshire, IlIn this role I was responsible for solving the Marketing department's technical problems and bringing the vision of the business to life with enabling digital solutions. Given the size of the team was small, I owned the technical roadmap and vision, but I was also the development lead charged with managing the delivery through offshore developers.- Completed IT approval of new digital marketing architecture within two months, following five years of unsuccessful attempts under previous leadership.- Integrated Akamai into the architecture, reducing response times by 3x in U.S. and from 5-15x globally, as well as resolving timeout issues in China.- Quickly hardened the footprint to remove multiple high-risk security vulnerabilities.- Resolved stability issues that had required site to be restarted every morning. -
Web Application ArchitectManifest Digital Oct 2008 - Oct 2010Chicago, IlManifest is a Chicago-based digital marketing agency with a vibrant culture that reflects its consistently fun and progressive contributions to the tech scene. In leading the agency's first Java practice, I regularly encountered fresh challenges and worked closely with clients, from pre-sale through project delivery. Relative to my previous employers, Manifest targeted smaller companies with proportionately smaller budgets. I therefore became adept at filling multiple roles in order to ensure the smooth execution of each project. Through this multidimensional experience, I learned firsthand how things operate end-to-end from the vantage point of each of those roles.- Grew the Java based business from 0 to 3 projects, with each bringing in more than $100k.- Mentored and trained new members in order to scale the practice and diversify our solution offerings.- Provided 100% client satisfaction as demonstrated through client feedback and developing further business. -

Product Development EngineerTexas Calculatem Mar 2004 - May 2007Texas Calculatem was an opportunistic startup that jumped on the internet poker boom by developing a product that calculated real time poker odds in order to help players make the best data driven decision possible each step of the way.My role was to take high level feature requests from company leadership and translate that into working software. Due to the fact we were a startup, that included every step in between: user experience mapping, wireframes, visual design, technical architecture, development, and deployment. The product was a huge success and the visionary founder decided to sell the company. I facilitated the transition of the product to the new overseas owners. After some time they rebranded and made the product available here: http://www.holdemgenius.com/I learned several unforgettable lessons from this opportunity: - The complexity in running native applications across millions of different platform, OS, and configuration combinations - How to prioritize a backlog of features yet still get to market and earn revenue - The value in listening to your customer to help drive the product roadmap (VOC)
