At the West Virginia Health Information Network (a not-for-profit Health Information Exchange), I was focused on making medical data useful and increasing interoperability between health care providers. By reducing redundancies in testing, facilitating timely communication between entities, we were ultimately able to save the precious time and money of West Virginia patients.

As a community health specialist in Swaziland, I embraced rural life and I bloomed where I was planted. My work centered around coordinating income generating activities and connecting local women and farmers with sustainable business practices.My passion for food security (good food is a human right!) directed me toward managing regular food preservation workshops and introducing making and selling peanut butter as a way to raise funds for local HIV support groups. I worked with an all-girls orphanage as a liaison between American donors and the organization. With these funds, I coordinated infrastructure improvements to the home and sourced grant funds for relevant developmental training. I also assisted other volunteers in their project activities by painting preschools, organizing logistics for meetings and camps, building playgrounds and so much more. I also served as an elected Peer Support Network member, which included coordinating regional meetings for volunteers, acting as a liaison between staff and colleagues, and providing general emotional and social support to my colleagues when needed.

The Wild Ramp is a unique year-round, indoor, community-supported farmers market. It is staffed predominantly by volunteers and provides a viable economic outlet for local food producers while providing consumers access to locally grown agricultural products. My mission was to invigorate support at the community level for local food, which led me to work toward educating market supporters in the areas of nutrition, food sourcing and preparation. As a result, the organization’s goal of empowering local agribusiness was furthered and the community benefited from the availability of healthy alternatives.I spearheaded various projects, in addition to my daily responsibilities which included ensuring market upkeep, record keeping, and cash-handling functions were carried out correctly. These projects included:-recruiting and training a well-rounded team of volunteers,-utilizing Google Docs to implement a system for tracking donors, producers, and volunteers,-organizing an inaugural local food festival, "Stink Fest",-planning logistics of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program,-using mixed media advertising such as a white board, recipe pamphlets, and social media to promote local food, and-introducing a recycling program.

The Americorps is a national program which engages volunteer members in intensive community service with the goal of helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. My year of service included building a community garden, facilitating hands-on learning experiences for students about garden sustainability and food security, teaching adults techniques in disease self-management, and designing and teaching curriculum on healthy eating for adults.
