Education is the single most important national security issue our country faces. As we move deeper into the 21st century or the Information Age we have more access to information then any time in the history of the world. Access to information is a good thing, if we know its accuracy, credibility, and reliability. It is our obligation to show students how to make those determinations on their own. We need to expose students to multiple sources of good and bad information. They need to weed out less than quality information and use quality information to formulate their own decisions:1. About the accuracy, credibility, and reliability of the information.2. Use the information to form their own opinion based on the acquired information.3. Understand the opposing opinion and be able to refute it with logical arguments based in evidence. This can only be done through understanding the source of information, close reading of the text while using habits of a proficient readers This requires true engagement with text and the ideas it conveys. We have been fed false information by enemies and allies alike. This spreads like wildfire and opens a wound which divides our nation. Education has for centuries told us what to think. Today more than ever we need to know how to think using the available information. Each student and family should make their own decisions based on accurate, reliable, and valid information.
