I have successfully led Energia’s Trading & Regulatory Teams through periods of significant market change driven by the introduction of the Single Electricity Market (SEM) in 2007 and the Integrated Single Electricity Market (ISEM) in 2018. I have helped shape Ireland's energy regulatory environment and led a number of successful legal and statutory challenges against inappropriate regulatory decisions.Energia’s wholesale activities include: risk management and the trading of power, gas and CO2 in the Irish, GB and European markets, the optimisation of 750MW of gas fired power plant and operational activities including the use of the power and gas interconnectors between the GB and Irish markets.

Driven by the commissioning of the Huntstown Power station towards the end of 2002, the role required the definition of the front, middle and back office culture, structure and procedures.The role was ‘green field’ and invloved all trading and commercial operational aspects of running a CCGT and managing interconnector trading between Ireland and Northern Ireland and between Northern Ireland and Scotland.

EAI membership comprises utilities that represent over 90 per cent of generation and retail business activities and 100 per cent of distribution within the Single Electricity Market (SEM). Members range in size from international power utilities to independent single plant operators.

Having previously traded gas and managed the operational changes required for the transition from pre to post Network code, I moved to the power side of the Northern Electric business.As Electricity Trading Manager I built and managed a small trading team and a larger 24 hour shift team during the transition from the E&W Electricity Pool to NETA. This included substantial new systems and processes to support a successful retail business and the trading of a power portfolio value of c500m.
