John P. Babel serves as the Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for CalAtlantic Group, Inc. (formerly Standard Pacific Corp.), one of the nation’s leading publicly traded homebuilders (NYSE: CAA). In addition to providing leadership as a member of the company’s executive management team, Mr. Babel oversees all aspects of the Company’s legal function.Named one of California’s 20 leading general counsel by The Daily Journal in 2012, John blends a pragmatic approach with his significant legal experience and deep knowledge of the Company’s business and strategy to provide practical business solutions to complex challenges. Promoted to General Counsel in February 2009, Mr. Babel was instrumental in the transformation of the Company during the recent economic downturn, including through a leading role in accessing private and public capital to restructure the Company’s balance sheet to position it for long term growth.Mr. Babel joined the Company in October 2002 as the Company’s Associate General Counsel and was quickly promoted to Vice President in 2005 and Senior Vice President in 2008. Prior to joining the Company, he was a corporate lawyer at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, an international law firm, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, governance, and securities law reporting and compliance. In that role, he represented domestic and international clients, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, spanning a variety of industries. His industry experience includes energy, life sciences, telecommunications, computer hardware and software, real estate, professional services, aerospace and manufacturing. John received his J.D., cum laude, from the Georgetown University Law Center and received a B.S. in environmental science and psychology, magna cum laude, from Bowling Green State University. John lives in San Clemente, CA with his wife Cathy and their two children Alex, 9 and Katie 7.
