At GE Global Research I built upon my technical education by completing GE's Edison Engineering Program classes. This allowed me to identify patent opportunities and counsel inventors through the process, from invention disclosure to patent issuance.I counseled and collaborated with business and technology leaders to develop and implement patent strategies that were cost effective and achieved business objectives, and provided sound legal advice and opinions regarding patentability, infringement, invalidity, and enforceability. I engaged my legal, technical, and businsess colleagues on IP matters, including providing updates on developments in practice before the PTO and relevant case law on patentability, validity, and infringement. I managed in-house and outside IP counsel, domestic and foreign, handling patent prosecution to achieve the IP goals of the company. I conducted freedom to operate reviews and monitored competitor intellectual property to mitigate risk.In my role as Editor-In-Chief of the GE Manual for Global Priority Patent Applications I led a global committee that reviewed and revised best practices for drafting and filing worldwide priority applications.

Oliff & Berridge was my first job in private practice. It was a great learning experience. All of the things that law school does not prepare you for, e.g. actual clients, time keeping, billing, working with support staff, etc. were taught to me. The teaching was rigorous. The workload was heavy and the expectations were high. The support was outstanding.Most importantly I learned that serving clients requires true professionalism and adherence to the duties of care, obedience, and loyalty. I also keep in mind the saying I often heard while working there: Things are never as bad as they seem, and things are never as good as they seem. I was an examiner for nine years in the electro-mechanical arts. While working at the PTO I attended George Washington University Law School's evening program. During my second year of night school I passed the partial signatory authority program and during my third year I passed the full signatory authority program and became a primary examiner. After leaving the PTO I was proud to receive the Department of Commerce's Bronze Medal for superior federal service for my time as a patent examiner.I learned a lot as an examiner, most importantly how the examination process is actually conducted and what motivates and incentives examiners and their supervisors, and what does not. To this day I maintain many friendships with my former colleagues at the PTO and keep up to date on practice before the Office. That includes reading the Official Gazette every Tuesday and the Federal Register notices. I also attend many of the training and CLE programs the PTO provides to practitioners and independent inventors to learn what and how examiners are being trained as the law continues to develop very quickly.
