John is an accomplished scholar, manager, evaluator, and curriculum designer, currently serving as the Executive Director of Youth Leadership Programs at The Aspen Institute. John manages a portfolio of youth and family programs operating across the country and focused on advancing leadership development, educational attainment, and economic mobility. Previously, John reached the rank of full professor at Loyola University Chicago, where he taught courses on leadership, human development, and multiculturalism. He worked in leadership education at University of Maryland, College Park and University of Nevada, Las Vegas.John’s research generated over 60 publications (e.g., refereed articles, books, and book chapters) and more than 100 presentations at national and international conferences. His work has accrued over 6,000 citations influencing the education and leadership development fields. This includes his most recent book: Leadership Theory: Cultivating Critical Perspectives. He is the principal investigator for the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL), a quantitative, international research program that collected data at more than 450 colleges and universities in 19 countries with data representing over 600,000 respondents.John earned his bachelor’s degree in Communications and Spanish from John Carroll University. He holds master’s and doctoral degrees in Counseling and Personnel Services from the University of Maryland, College Park.
