About John Button

Third-year Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Master of Science in Oral and Population Health (MOPH) student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (D3). I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tufts University in 2022 where I studied Biochemistry and French Literature, with an emphasis on 19th- and 20th-century French poetry. My primary interests are dental medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, global health, and the French language. I enjoy evaluating health issues from systemic and cultural perspectives in order to inform both my research and patient care.I started a research initiative in the Center for Integrative Global Oral Health (CIGOH) at Penn Dental Medicine focused on the gangrenous infection of orofacial tissues known as noma. My current work aims to elucidate the geographic distribution of noma cases with the goal of developing a policy-informing model on how best to allocate medical supplies and interventions for noma patients. I also regularly translate research articles and other documents between French and English for the CIGOH.As part of my advocacy work on noma, I joined the advisory committee of the International Noma Network. I serve as a dental health liaison, student and research ambassador, and French translator. I hope to encourage more dental students and oral health professionals to join the fight against noma by uniting the international noma research community.I am an appointed researcher in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. I work closely with Dr. Brian Ford, DMD, MD, FACS, investigating the factors which influence dental implant success rates. Our current research aims to provide guidance on how the success and failure rates of dental implants are influenced by different antibiotic regimens.Since 2020, I have researched and presented on rural and STEM education. The article, “How Chemists Handle Not-Knowing in Reasoning about a Novel Problem” (Button, Pamuk, and Hammer, 2023), summarizes my work as a part of the Institute for Research on Learning and Instruction (IRLI) at Tufts University and was published in the July 2023 edition of The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Journal: Chemistry Education Research and Practice.Web of Science ResearcherID: HTR-9262-2023https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6336-8043
