Hydrogeology and Geological Engineering in Portland and the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Geologic mapping, geological cross-sections, well site work and testing of water wells in the Columbia River Basalt. Geotechnical investigations in the Troutdale Formation and the Coast Range. Performed a full range of geological work in the Willamette Valley in the cities of Eugene and Portland as well as near the home base of my office, Salem, Oregon. This comprehensive work includes assembly of deep water well locations, depths, production intervals and formation contacts. This data supports full hydrogeological maps; including well tables, strike and dip cross-sections, structure and isopach maps and water budgets. These mapping resources enable finding of structural ridges, folds, faults and buried water-bearing fairways.

Jul 1992 - Present

Wellsite Geologist/Geosteering

Empirica Surface Logging, Ltd

Houston, Texas Area

The oil business is booming again, in the west, from North Dakota to Texas. Wellsite geologists (mudloggers and geosteering experts) are the first observers to see drilling cuttings that come up with the returning drilling mud in new vertical and horizontal wells. I have served in this wellsite capacity in the Eagle Ford horizontal drilling trend, near San Antonio, Texas in the Bakken horizontal trend near Williston, North Dakota and in Midland, Texas doing wellsite mudlogging. My work was as a "Second Hand" or "Night Logger".

Jan 2010 - Sep 2012

Project Geologist, East Side Centralized Storm Overflow Project

Foundation Engineering Incorporated

Portland, Oregon Area

Described the soil cuttings and rock core. Found silt and clay-filled buried channels and documented those with geoprobe soundings. Found areas of very hard drilling in large basalt boulders and alerted the prime contractor to those changes. Discovered formation water-gain layers and water-loss strata that would slow tunneling progress. Due in part to these observations, this $1.5 Billion stormwater tunnel project was completed five months ahead of schedule. System operators claim that the outfall has captured more of the high runoff flows than anticipated, due to manipulation of the series of large pumps.

Aug 2004 - Mar 2005

Instructor

Independence, Oregon

Taught 500 physical science laboratory students, assisting their work with study guides and reaching some of them according to the Seven Styles of Learning. Twenty percent of each test comprised simple and complex application questions. Students found out about my involvement with starting a rowing team in college and asked me to start a rowing team at their school. I did and about 15 students from my classes came out regularly to practices.

Jan 2001 - Dec 2002

Hydrologist, Detroit Ranger District

Detroit Lake, Oregon

Documented and evaluated more than 100 forest road damage sites, caused by the February 1996 Storm and by later storm events. Described landslides and debris torrents at flood and live stream crossings. Recommended repairs and upgrades of destroyed or damaged forest road bridges and culverts to engineers and Forest Service managers.

Jul 1997 - Jun 1998

Hydrogeologist

Set up groundwater monitoring networks for the State of Oregon in areas of observed long-term water level declines. These networks became Groundwater Management Areas supervised by other hydrogeologists, planners and water rights experts. Planned and performed Aquifer Tests between irrigation wells and residential wells.

Sep 1985 - Nov 1989

Wireline Sales Representative/Petroleum Geologist

Tom Hansen, Inc.

This unique cased-hole wireline company served the oil/gas well completion sector in Oklahoma and Texas. Learned to interpret cased-hole bond logs of the standard sonic tool and of the company's proprietary neutron bond log device.

Jan 1984 - Jun 1985

Petroleum Geologist

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area

Petroleum Geologist in charge of making oil and gas prospects in five north-central Oklahoma counties. Site geologist on other wells in Caddo County and in southern Kansas, north to Hays. This post provided training in geological mapping and preparing cross-sections to find the best locations for new wells. The work was to develop new oil/gas fields in extensive lease holdings by Gulf. Each well cost $1.3 Million. Present day (2013) cost for a directional well in the same location is more than $12 Million. Major target formations were the Mississippi Solid and the Hunton Formation (Devonian), where production was enhanced by rock fractures.
