He hired me and was my manager for a year at Atlassian. One of the many groups that he managed was the Program Managers for marketing, of which I was one. He was fantastic at setting individual quarterly goals for me that stretched me professionally. I also felt that he had a clear vision of what our role in the company should be as a program management team and also set challenges for us to raise the bar on that vision. One of his core strengths, which conintually impressed me, was his ability to give clear, comprehensive descriptions of complex, messy things. His descriptions would include all of the competing view points, contexts, and potential outcomes. These "big picture views" allowed everyone in the room to begin a conversation around the topic with a vision of moving forward and making progress (instead of getting stuck in old debates). His other strengths included helping us make thoughtful tradeoffs throughout the marketing org, thinking about the end-to-end of a project/program/effort and identifying how it will effect everyone involved, encouraging direct communication during conflict, cutting through office politics by demonstrating genuine concern and providing helpful feedback, and being the first to remember that we are all human and making us laugh.
