About John Searby

Leveraging the experience of 10 years of collegiate athletics administration and basketball coaching has allowed me to develop and build winning teams in a variety of industries. As a non-profit leader in a booming metro area, I utilize my unique background to be nimble and respond to the needs of our community, donors, board members, and parters all across the Charlotte region and beyond.With experience in marketing, branding, facilities integration, sponsorship planning, design, and advertising, I have led sales teams for Adams Outdoor Advertising, Downstream, and XOS Digital. I also served as Asst. Athletic Director for External Affairs at Bradley University where I oversaw all aspects of the university's athletics marketing, fundraising, and corporate sponsorship sales.My professional foundation comes from my collegiate basketball coaching experience. During my career, I served as an assistant at Gardner-Webb University, Tennessee Tech University, and Auburn University. I was also the Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director at Lincoln Christian University where I led a department of 10 sports and also directed the men’s basketball program to a school record 22 wins and a national quarter final appearance. My educational background includes a master’s degree in English from Tennessee Tech University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English from Milligan College where I was the team captain for a NAIA National Tournament team for four years. Personally, I enjoy kayaking, running, mountain biking, reading, camping, and hiking with my family near our Charlotte-area home in Belmont, NC. I am married to Jessi (Fick), and have a son Jack and daughter Josie.

In this role, I manage ongoing planning and administration of the camp as well as the programming and day-to-day operations of the camp.Established in 2013 by Jay Bilas and John Searby, the Jay Bilas Skills Camp sprung from a vision to meet a need that the founders saw in the competitive basketball landscape for high school boys. While coaching Jay's son, Anthony, for several years together in AAU Basketball, John and Jay felt that the young men they were coaching and coaching against were lacking a place outside of their high school teams where they could get concentrated basketball skill teaching that would help them improve their game.Both Jay and John desired to establish a camp that followed the format of the camps they grew up with as they were preparing for their collegiate playing and coaching careers - skill focused, team focused, residential, and disciplined. This invitation only camp has a maximum capacity of 100 campers to ensure the individualized instruction and hands on teaching by Jay, John, and the other camp coaches.
