Initially Masons, then Pinsent Masons, I joined as an Associate and made partner at the time of the merger with Pinsents.When I joined, Masons had the market leading IT Disputes team, led by Clive Seddon, and it was that reputation that led me to join them. Initially it was a very small team, but the office in Scotland was grown under the leadership of Alastair Morrison and Vincent Connor to the powerhouse that it is now.I concentrated on Intellectual Property disputes and technology disputes, but was also involved in more general commercial litigation. With the coming into force of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, and the introduction of adjudication into the construction sector, I was fortunate enough to be able to use my qualification as a solicitor advocate to argue some of the early cases on the powers of an adjudicator.I was also instructed on larger scale disputes across Scotland and England. These included very significant intellectual property disputes as well as high value commercial disputes.Mediation was a large part of my practice, with many cases being resolved at mediation.

At Bird Semple, with John Salmon leading the charge, the TechMedia Law unit was formed, which was aimed squarely at the growing technology sector.

Carlton Gilruth was one of the biggest firms in Dundee and I initially focused exclusively on disputes work. This covered all areas, from construction claims to contract disputes, family work to property disputes.With the advent of email, websites and networked computers (remember all that...) I combined my interested in the application of technology with my contentious work and started writing basic code. Database work followed and I created systems to try and streamline the document heavy litigation process.
