John Stodder Jr. is professional communicator whose 40+ year career encompasses public affairs, public relations, journalism, political campaigns, and communications strategies for environmental policy, social and mental health services and a range of public sector agencies from LAX to the cities of Stockton, Glendale, Pico Rivera and Newport Beach. For a series of public relations and communications agencies, John has overseen how clients strategically communicate with the news media and key stakeholders. When clients face potential or actual crisis situations or potential negative media coverage, John helps formulate the strategies and tactics to safeguard the client’s reputation among its critical audiences. When clients are looking ahead to a major new initiative, John interviews internal and external stakeholders as part of a landscape assessment, from which strategies and messages will derive. When clients want to encapsulate their arguments for influencers and the public, John will work with them to draft and place op-eds that tell their stories. In his long career, John has dealt with dozens of complicated, legally sensitive and highly technical issues, finding ways to frame the complexity in simpler terms to reach and engage key audiences.Prior to starting Intrepid Communications, John held positions in journalism, government and with global and local public relations firms. He was head of Public Affairs in the LA office of Edelman; worked as a reporter for City News Service, and was Director of Social Media for The Dolan Company, a business and legal news publisher. He served in senior positions in the administrations of LA Mayor Tom Bradley and LA County Supervisor Ed Edelman, playing central roles in the creation of the Dept. of Children and Family Services, the county’s first programs in response to the HIV/AID epidemic, and the City of LA’s recycling, stormwater and electric transportation programs.The sum of all this experience is my consultancy, which has served a range of private, non-profit and public sector clients during the past 10 years.
