John is the CEO of McDonald Financial Corporation, after serving as an officer and director of two Canadian investment dealers. He has worked as a financial services sector analyst, portfolio manager and trustee in the domestic and international capital markets and served for 7 years with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the Finance department. Prior thereto his career included 7 years of internal, external and comprehensive audit experience in a number of domestic and international sectors. John served as the Trust Administrator of the Move Ontario Trust, used to fund distributions in respect of $3.7 billion of capital investments in an 8.6-kilometre, six-station extension to the Toronto Transit Commission’s Yonge-University-Spadina line. The project was successfully completed in December, 2017. He serves as a director of Infrastructure Ontario ("IO") - created to generate value out of the public assets of the Province of Ontario by working with partners in both the public and private sectors. John serves IO as a member of the Governance and Compensation committee, Credit and Real Estate committee and Chairs IO's Audit and Risk committee. He is qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Professional Accountant (CA and CPA) and holds the ICD.D designation.

Overseeing two fixed income investment management organizations managing the Trust’s $1 billion Canadian fixed income portfolio, and managing regular distributions to the Executive Task Force which governed the activities of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension project. The project was completed on December 15, 2017 at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre terminal station. The extension cost approximately $3.18 billion and has generated thousands of jobs during its construction.

Discretionary Portfolio Manager

Participated, as a director and vice president with other board members in the financial reorganization and merging of the firm, the combined entity eventually becoming one of the largest securities dealers in Canada, under the Merrill Lynch brand name; Appeared frequently in the press, reinforcing brand recognition; Interviewed, investigated, analyzed and compared publicly-traded banks, insurance companies and securities dealers, publishing dozens of institutional research recommendations, reports and studies; Developed a multi-year, in-depth financial database covering all significant publicly traded bank and non-bank financial institutions, hired staff to maintain, and used system as an analytical & marketing/reporting tool; Presented recommendations to 50 money management firms, plan sponsors, fund companies and corporations in 6 financial centers; Marketed and sold research findings to firm’s 55 retail branches from Vancouver to Halifax via branch visits and daily conference calls; Expanded firm’s retail brokerage system holdings of financial services stocks from lowest to highest percentage of all 13 sectors within a 12 month period.

Accountant (International) Developed a computer model (still referred to as “the model”) used to prepare the quantitative material in the Treasurer’s quarterly Board Paper entitled “Review of the Fund’s Income Position, the Rate of Charge, Precautionary Balances, and Burden Sharing. Participated in meetings with related divisions and technology support teams regarding changes in system configuration, as required, and authorized technology support team to perform required work. Adopted innovative technology and best practices in various financial operations, corporate governance, and internal control systems.

Selected for the audit team representing Canada’s Auditor General at United Nations (UN) headquarters in his capacity as Chairman of the External Audit Committee of the UN General Assembly. Contributed to the team by auditing UN headquarters and the UN Development Program, utilizing audit staff provided by the Auditors’ General of Ghana and Bangladesh. Performed financial, operational and computer audit reviews and investigations and consulting assignments with PricewaterhouseCoopers as co-auditors. Comprehensive Audit & Investigations Auditor (Comprehensive) Participated in a working group which evaluated the format and development of the Estimates of Canada and recommended a governance/accountability/reporting model for inclusion in the Auditor General’s 1976 Annual Report to Parliament.
