I have known John for almost twelve years, first as the administrator for our Masters degree program in Health Professions Education (MHPE), and subsequently as a colleague and collaborator. As Director of the MHPE, I recruited John and consider that decision the smartest personnel decision I have made in over 20 years of higher education administration. John is smart. He is both “book smart,” with an excellent grasp of higher education issues, concepts, and theoretical frameworks, but he is also “street smart” in the sense that he can apply this wealth of knowledge to practical problems that he encounter in various positions he has held. John has developed considerable expertise in higher education policies and diversity, inclusion, and equity problems and programs. This ability to combine the theoretical with the applied is one of John’s more remarkable talents. Along with smart, John is also very creative. He does more than simply regurgitate knowledge and apply routine measures, he thinks about problems with innovation and creativity. He is a tremendous asset to brainstorming sessions to generate new ideas as well as in the critical appraisal of those ideas. John is not tied to specific theories or procedures but is always eager for new ways of viewing and working through problems. John is highly motivated and self-directed. He is almost always ahead of me in defining actions that needed to be taken and halfway to the solution before I got around to raising the issue. He is committed and dedicated and his example has been a stimulus to the faculty in the MHPE. John has stimulated and designed “spin-offs” from the program that lead to certificate programs. Such initiative, self-direction, and motivation are essential to success sin his domain. In addition to his intellectual gifts and problem solving abilities, John is also personable and collaborative. Calling someone a “team player” has lost much of its value from overuse, but that is exactly what John is. Being a team player in an environment of physicians and faculty with generously sized egos is not an easy task, but John managed it so well, that all trusted him. In fact, John often ran many of our committee meetings. He has a delightful sense of humor but is always appropriate to the occasion. In summary, I consider John Vasquez to be an exceptional and valuable candidate. He demonstrates compelling skill as an educational scholar and leader in higher education. He has all of the characteristics I look for in a professional colleague: open-mindedness, critical analysis, awareness of competing values and priorities, the ability to work effectively with colleagues, and the energy to implement decisions.I support his candidacy for a position with the highest possible enthusiasm"
