JOHN W. BARBER is a Winnipeg lawyer and mediator trained in alternate dispute resolution. He is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg and the University of Saskatchewan. Mr. Barber has practiced law in Manitoba since 1985. He established his own law office in 1987, and founded Assiniboia Law Office in 2004. In 2019 he sold the Assiniboia Law Office but continued to practice until he retired temporarily in December 2021 and in August 2023 began working as an Associate lawyer at McRobert Law Office in Winnipeg.Mr. Barber has over 35 years of experience in various areas of law. He has been involved in structuring numerous estate planning solutions and probate related legal matters, as well as residential and commercial purchase and sale transactions and mortgage financing where he has acted for both lenders and borrowers. He provides independent legal advice to borrowers on numerous CHIP or HomEquity Bank reverse mortgages. He retired temporarily in December 2021.Mr. Barber has been actively involved in advanced estate planning for families who wish to structure succession of family property to subsequent generations. He was formerly a member of Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and held the TEP designation* until 2019. He has served on the Board of Directors of STEP Winnipeg for a number of years, and has completed the STEP Advanced Certificate in Trust Disputes.In the past, Mr. Barber has acted as a mediator with Mediation Services. Mr. Barber has also acted as mediator in personal injury claims at the request of the Canadian Dispute Resolution Corporation and at the request of interested parties in relation to other legal matters. He is a past member of the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Manitoba, where he served on the Board of Directors.
