Program director for the international Ocean Drilling Program and the US Scientist Support Program

As a participant in the Canadian JGOFS (Joint Global Ocean Flux Studies) program, and working with Drs. Tom Pedersen and Steve Calvert, I conducted research on ocean geochemistry (nutrient utilization via nitrogen isotopic studies) in recent and ancient ocean sediments resulting in this publication: Farrell, J.W., Pedersen, T.F., Calvert, S.E., Nielsen, B., 1995. As a co-PI on grants from the US National Science Foundation, I conducted paleoceanographic research using strontium isotope geochemistry to create the highest resolution chronostratigraphic reference curve of Late Neogene seawater (used to date global deposits of sediments and rocks), and to document links between global climate change and the seawater strontium isotope composition.
