I grew a lot in this role. Initially I took responsibility for the chief executive's office performance report. By the end, I was producing all five departmental performance reports as well as the council's overall corporate performance report. Fixing the problems with performance reporting inevitably led me into working on strategic planning as well. Three years into the role, I got a diploma in corporate performance management. Filling in those theory gaps was really helpful.I represented the chief executive's office at the information management group and the strategic risk management group. This was extremely helpful for me, as someone in a junior role, to learn how the council manages information and risk corporately.I got involved in the project to set up the council's public consultation arrangements following an LGA peer review. I really enjoyed this work a lot especially setting up all the governance from scratch. I went on a lot of consultation institute training courses and helped people from all across the council go through the process of setting up great consultations. Running so many surveys and analysing the results really helped me understand the importance of being specific with questions and avoiding vagueness to collect meaningful data.A few years in, the council set up a transformation team and I took a spare seat on the prince 2 foundation & practitioner week long course. After that, I provided data analysis support for transformation projects. Similar to the consultation work, this spanned the whole council and I learnt how to analyse all kinds of interesting data sets. And it gave me a really good overview of the kind of data issues teams on the frontline face.I also signed up to represent the council in an emergency. I went to the emergency planning college to do a couple of courses, introduction to civil protection and tactical emergency planning. I learnt a lot from emergency planning especially the importance of good leadership.

My first real job, my manager was worried I'd get bored and leave before the six-month contract was up because in his eyes overview & scrutiny isn't as exciting as chemical engineering. I ended up hanging around for 12 years.I supported an overview & scrutiny working group to do a very thorough review of the safeguarding children arrangements in the council. I organised the meetings which involved manually ringing round to check availability, learned to write professional meeting minutes, and made some sweet graphs from live polling data. This was well before Teams or Slido existed so people were extremely excited by this.
