About Jon Cooper

I have worked in PK-12 public education in Delaware for 26 years. I am passionate about the incredible entitlement that the United States provides for all children and adolescents to receive a free and appropriate public education. Because our public school system serves everyone, regardless of need, I believe that comparisons to other countries' educational systems are of very limited value. Likewise, comparison of the effectiveness of our current system to the way that we operated public schools in the past often does not take into consideration that we have considerably raised expectations for all students PK-12 in the past 20 years since the introduction of No Child Left Behind. While we continue to have much work to do to support our students academic and non-academic needs, I strongly believe that we have the best public school system in the world and our students and their families, teachers, support professionals, administrators and operations folks are simply incredible. I am committed to working to understand and support the increased efficiency of our delivery systems and coordinating with community providers in mental and physical health to address our students' needs in school. I have a particular interest in working with students (and their families) who have experienced short and/or long-term separation from school for any reason, including alternative school placement, incarceration, psychiatric hospitalization and school avoidance due to anxiety and/or other adjustment challenges. I also like working with undergraduate and graduate students who are eager to develop their skills in educational assessment, special education services and educational policy.
