About Jon Davison

Jon Davison has been professor of teacher education in four universities including the Institute of Education, University of London where he was the first Professor of Teacher Education and also Dean. His research and supervision interests include sociolinguistics, the teaching and learning of English and Media, citizenship education and the professional formation of teachers. For the past four decades he has promoted values-based Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and critically reflective practice by teachers.In 1993 Jon led the PGCE team at Canterbury Christ Church University to establish a PGCE Secondary programme premised upon a structure of professional values - the first of its kind in the country. From 2005 - 2008 he served as a member of the Executive and the Governing Council of the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers.Jon has lectured on teaching and learning, teacher education and citizenship education in ten countries throughout Europe - from Finland to Portugal - and in the USA, Canada, Africa and Asia. He has also acted as advisor to the TTA, OFSTED, DFE as well as to a number of ministries of education worldwide. He serves on a number of editorial boards including the British Journal of Educational Studies and the Journal of Citizenship Teaching and Learning. Jon has been Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, University of Birmingham. Fellowships include: the College of Teachers, the Higher Education Academy, the Royal Society of Arts, the Society for Educational Studies and he is a Founding Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching. From 2006 - 2016 he was Chair of the Society for Educational Studies, which celebrated its 60th Anniversary in December 2011. To mark this occasion, the book ‘Education Matters’, which Jon co-edited with James Arthur and Richard Pring, was published in the Routledge Education Heritage Series in March 2012. June 2019, saw Jon’s publication of the 5th edition of ‘Learning to Teach English in the Secondary School’ (Routledge). His most recent publication, ‘Debates in English Teaching, 2nd edition’ (Routledge), was published in April 2020.

It is a non-statutory advisory body responsible for advising the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, through the University Grants Committee (UGC), on the needs of Hong Kong's higher education institutions in the field of academic research and for the distribution of funding for academic research projects undertaken by academic staff of those UGC-funded institutions. citizED is an organisation, previously funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). It is a collaboration within higher education for all providers of initial teacher education in England. citizED is organised principally around teacher education in primary, secondary, cross curricular, post 16 and community involvement contexts with outputs in the form of conferences, seminars, workshops, research papers and practical resources for teaching. citizED is promoting a number of specific research initiatives, including work on assessment in teacher education for citizenship. An international journal of citizenship and teacher education was launched by citizED in July 2005. citizED is working in partnership with a wide variety of individuals and organisations including the Association for Citizenship Teaching (ACT).
