All changed because of reductions in Local Authority staffing but this was a great job to follow on from previous Service Manager positions for Transport, Fleet and Parking. The common thread in all these was bringing private sector commercial thinking to business improvement and performance. In the Place Directorate the approach was the same but with a wider variety of services acting on a semi consultancy basis. Lots of improvements made in the way the businesses were run over a broad spectrum including recruitment, communications and marketing. Also as a senior manager picking up lots of the more tricky disciplinaries and grievances.

Quite some 10 years this was! I travelled all over UK and parts of Europe heading up a sales team for at the time the UK's market leader in height safety equipment. We grew really good distributor networks for two brands operating side by side and also started an installation arm which amongst other things kitted out the towers on the then Millenium Dome. I saw some fascinating things and the business grew up towards £8 million at the time. It certainly put me in good stead for what was to come!
