Following the release of the OBJECTS AND MEMORY documentary film, and national PBS broadcasts for the seventh, tenth, fifteenth, and twentieth anniversaries of 9/11, I have been developing a project that has the potential of nurturing significant positive change. This documentary project for tv and the web, with the working title HUMAN CENTERED, is about people confronting problems in the US and around the world through observation, empathy, insight, innovation, and perseverance. This emerging field is called social impact design (or public interest design or human-centered design) and is characterized by smart, dedicated people who want to help the majority of the world’s population. By introducing the public to the concept and practice of design for social impact we hope to spur increased support for this work (and to help nudge the zeitgeist from self-interest to service). At the same time we want to provide role models of pragmatic idealists so that people can envision paths for fulfilling their potential while making the world better. The field of social impact design is so diverse and growing that a single film can hardly capture its scope and significance. It involves products, structures, and systems that improve human well-being in many areas, as well as the approach, attitudes, and practices that underlie these efforts. Each story, in its tale of challenge, engagement, persistence, and resolution, has a compelling story arc. The topic calls for a limited series coupled with extensive web resources and a public engagement campaign. As this is potentially a big and important project, we are seeking likeminded co-production partners. While researching and developing the HUMAN CENTERED project I continued (until the pandemic) to speak at colleges, museums, libraries, and civic centers about the issues raised in OBJECTS AND MEMORY. I recently resumed those presentations with a virtual presentation for Columbia University.

Producer/Director/EducatorEver 1997 - PresentAlmost twenty years after 9/11, what have we learned? As this transformative event becomes part of the tapestry of history, we can see basic human truths: how we respond to momentous circumstances, what is most important when times are uncertain, what we hold dear. With narration by Frank Langella and music by Philip Glass, the OBJECTS AND MEMORY documentary film depicts experiences in the aftermath of 9/11 and other major historic events to reveal how we join together in community and see otherwise ordinary things as symbols of identity, memory, and aspiration. PBS's national prime time special for the 7th, 10th, and 15th anniversaries of 9/11, it was awarded the 2010 American Assn. for State and Local History Award of Merit. In its exploration of people preserving the past and speaking to the future, OBJECTS AND MEMORY invites thought about the fundamental nature of human interaction.Based on the work of the film, I have developed programs and workshops that explore issues raised by the film: how we recognize history as it is happening, how we make sense of turbulent times, what fundamental human qualities drive our responses, how things get into museums, how we navigate through a fragile and chaotic world by using otherwise ordinary things that have become irreplaceable conveyors of identity, experience, and aspiration. The presentations and workshops examine issues of contemporary history, material culture, historic preservation, art, philosophy, cross-cultural studies, museum studies, memory, meaning, and value: how we imbue physical things with significance.
