There are no grandiose statements about his mark on the city or culture, but rather a sincere and modest ambition to connect his life to the making of meaningful buildings. Meaningful to his own and his family’s life, his client’s life and to the built environment and society generally. Architecture seen through a multi-dimensional lense that connects the discipline to the natural world, society and the technology that underpins it. Jon’s father was an Architect, so he understands the territory and the challenges having been surrounded by drawings and buildings from the beginning. It was not a straightforward pathway as Jon’s broad range of interests and aptitudes led him in various directions but studies in Industrial Design and Architecture ultimately led to him graduating in Architecture from the University of Technology Sydney with 1st Class Honours, the University Medal, and the NSW Board of Architects Medallion in 1993. During his studies Jon worked in the offices of Architecture Oceania and AIA Gold Medallist Ken Maher in Sydney and in London for Richard Horden and Covell Matthews Wheatley while also travelling extensively throughout Europe Africa and Asia before ultimately registering as an architect and setting up Design King Company in Sydney with his wife and fellow director Katie King in 1994. The Practice and our key collaborators have been recognized with numerous awards and publications for the residential and commercial work and has established a highly regarded reputation illustrating an obvious commitment to the many dimensions of architecture, the journey through life and its implications to the making of meaningful buildings. As the practice evolves Jon sees his role as leader and Creative Director of DKC evolving, lending creative direction to the practice, providing oversight of the projects, and empowering staff to grow personally and professionally. His life will remain as ever rich and varied and still circumscribed by the belief meaningful buildings positively contribute to our world.
