As tech lead for Live, a major company-wide initiative with a dedicated newsroom desk, have ultimate technical responsibility for the full editorial and reader experience around live coverage. Work closely with business and newsroom stakeholders to rapidly identify and develop site features that increase the expressiveness of the live report on The New York Times website. Guide a team of five engineers through major projects including: the primary editing system for live formats; the frontend rendering code for live assets; a Slack-based filing method for reporters integrated with the publishing platform; and real-time push alerts for live coverage. Collaborated directly with the newsroom on features for high profile events like the Trump impeachment trials, the 2020 general election, the Biden inauguration, and the Coronavirus pandemic. Offer technical guidance to teams across the company and collaborate with top leadership on technical strategy as elected chair (formerly member) of the Architecture Review Board, a selective group of individual contributors. One of the primary maintainers of the Story renderer and member of on-call rotation for nytimes.com.

Responsible for all technology operations at a modern, highly technical museum. Serve as lead full-stack developer on projects including public-facing interactive web features, new exhibitions, and internal services. Manage and maintain cloud-based and on-premise servers, network infrastructure, and software deployment pipelines. Planned and executed numerous initiatives, including migrating mission-critical administrative systems to more stable and scalable solutions; developing software that will allow visitors to bring elements of the museum experience home; and engaging the community through open source exhibit software and organizing MoMath’s first hackathon. Manage a team of three and two interns and have led successful hiring initiatives.

Worked closely with then-deputy editor of Interactive News Ben Koski to prototype an experimental platform for live and breaking news coverage at The New York Times. Contributed to the full stack. Other projects included developing a caching system for a site-wide analytics dashboard, developing a customizable and embeddable analytics table, and contributing to internal Ruby gems that access newsroom APIs.

Acted as lead developer for a variety of applications emphasizing real-time data collection and presentation. Projects included full-stack implementation and deployment of a new permanent installation, including an extensible software system for autonomous collection and integration of diverse data streams; an SMS-based pledge system and live visualization, which has raised more than $2 million for the Museum and has been licensed to several other non-profit organizations; and spearheading an effort in participatory museum technology by creating a developer kit for a large installation. Also assisted with server administration and maintaining complex custom software and hardware systems.

Collaborated closely with New York Times interactive developer Tiffany Fehr on an enterprise data project involving data scraping, massive use of a third-party geo-coding API and spatial analysis to investigate the relationship between a new public transportation system and business growth, leading to a graphic in the print and web editions and a blog post. Also contributed to front-end development for several stories.

Spearheaded an industry-leading effort to use data-driven tools and applications to present building performance information to architects and contractors. Projects included complex interactive data visualizations, data scraping and integration, real-time visualization of sensor data, and physical data visualization.

Contributed to the back-end development on the world's largest collection of academic syllabi. Designed and coded an innovative Twitter-based submission system using the Twitter API and Python.

Designed and implemented, in coordination with Dr. Roosevelt Móntas (Director of the Center for the Core Curriculum, Columbia University), an intensive philosophy and writing curriculum for a small group of high school seniors from underserved Manhattan schools. Responsibilities included: planning and delivering classroom lessons; facilitating classroom discussions; designing and evaluating assessments; and drafting letters of recommendation. First undergraduate instructor asked to return for a second term.

Oversaw the editorial and business operations of a premier peer-reviewed journal of undergraduate social science research.
