My current research interest is within aerosol science and technology. It is focused mainly on two areas: aerosol technology in life science (particle-lung interactions, inhaled medicine and medical devices), and aerosol research in environmental science, (including climate effects and health impact of environmental aerosols).Within life science, my Ph D project included the development of a novel diagnostic technique for respiratory disease based on measurements of lung deposition of nanoparticles. The research resulted in new technology and methods for lung deposition measurements as well as models for interpreting the results of such measurements to obtain new information about individual lung properties, which can be used to assess lung structure and function. The hypothesis that I argued for during my defense, that the information gained by the method was similar to that of MRI of the lung with hyperpolarized noble gas, was recently confirmed in a direct comparison study by subsequent Ph D students. I am currently involved in developing methods for testing and approving medical devices for inhaled medicine and respiratory care and as a scientific advisor for some clinical inhalation studies. In recent years I have also expanded my research into the environmental science field. A special interest has been investigation of ice nucleating atmospheric aerosol particles (INPs). These particles are scarse in the atmosphere but have a disproportional important role in the formation of clouds, cloud properties and precipitation, thus most likely have a significant impact on both local weather, radiative forcing and global climate. Even though INPs have been intensely studied for many decades many of the processes they are involved in are not yet fully understood. My interest has been focused on one of the more challenging aspects of INPs, that of time-dependence in atmospheric ice processes from an experimental point of view, and how to incorporate this in meteorological models. My latest planned project involves investigating the largest unintentional world-wide intervention for air quality mitigation ever conducted: the 2020 covid-19 shutdown and the effects of this event in Sweden.My colleagues often describe me as a dedicated, loyal and supportive scientist with an open mind and an ability to adapt, improvise and make things work.
