I have been a full professor at the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver since 1992. I have written or edited 12 books, in Russian and Chinese politics, security studies and revolutions. I am a frequent speaker on Israel for a variety of organizations in the US. I have worked for SAIC for eight years as a Senior Scientist on contracts for the Defense Department and for the State Department, going on 19 international speaking tours ranging from China, Japan, India and Mongolia to England, Germany, Turkey and Chile. I have been to China and Russia almost two dozen times, most recently this summer teaching a course on the Middle East at the Chinese Ministry of Security Studies' University of International Relations in Beijing. I have taught at Hebrew University and the University of Haifa and during my eight times in Israel also worked with the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

I taught an intensive course on the Middle East to 115 Chinese students in Beijing at the Chinese Ministry of State Security's college, the University of International Relations. Even though I have been a frequent visitor to China since 1988 (19 visits) and have been an Honorary Professor at both Peking University and People's University, this was still quite an experience for me. My course coincided with the maturing of the crisis in Egypt and on the last day of class the Egyptian military seized power.

My first academic job was a year in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama, right after getting my Ph.D from Columbia in 1976. I learned a lot about the South and academia and it left me ready to move on to Denver, where I have been ever since.
