"The Engineer ought to be equipped with knowledge of many disciplines and varied learning, by the judgement of which all that is accomplished by these other arts is tested." —Virtuvius, technical adviser to Caesar Augustus, and widely regarded as the first published engineer, in his seminal work "De Architectura"I approach design from a holistic perspective, taking into account the electronic, structural, dynamic, controls, manufacturing, and artificial intelligence challenges of achieving a desired objective when designing my mechanisms, so I can help my team-members achieve their goals just as I achieve mine. While my major field may have been design, robotics, and manufacturing, and taught from the mechanical side, I deliberately sought out coursework or project roles involving programming, electronics, dynamics, mechanisms, and even the arts to find those places where insights from one could be applied to greatest effect in the others—where a change here could anticipate and elegantly solve a would-be problem there, before it became one.I particularly enjoy the design of mechatronic systems and robots, because the confluence of these systems is so clearly on display: a robot’s hardware without its software will sit there lifeless and idle, its software outside of the context of its hardware is naught but meaningless code, and yet together they can achieve marvelous things.I am the kind of worker who is happy to take direction, but able to take charge of a situation and lead if that is what is needed.
