Jonathan Bamber is professor of glaciology and Earth Observation, University of Bristol, and a guest professor (half time) in the AI4EO lab at the Technical University of Munich. He splits his time between these two institutes. He has a degree in physics (Bristol) and a PhD in glaciology/remote sensing (Cambs). He has >35 years experience in the analysis of airborne & satellite data sets from the polar regions, specialising in the use of radar/laser altimetry and microwave remote sensing over the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and in combining these data with models of the cryosphere-climate system. He has published > 200 peer-reviewed articles on these topics. He was founder and editor in chief of the Open Access journal The Cryosphere, published by the European Geosciences Union for ten years. He was a member of the Global Geodetic Observing System Science Team and a Review Editor and expert reviewer for the fifth assessment report of the IPCC, and contributing author to the sixth IPCC report. He has participated in UN COP climate meetings since 2003, including the historic COP21 in Paris in 2015. In 2015 he was elected as the next president of the European Geosciences Union, beginning his term of office as president in 2017. During his presidency he initiated an EGU science for policy programme, various climate and environmental awareness initiatives and a major restructuring of the secretariat. In 2019 he was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and has been named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics from 2018-2020. He has written numerous articles for non science audiences on the polar regions, climate change and risks associated with sea level rise and for several years has worked on decision making under deep uncertainty. More recently he has been developing an open source s/w package for spatio-temporal modelling that has been used for geoscience, epidemiology and other health-related research: https://4dmodeller.github.io/fdmr/.
