Distribution & Plant Section Supervisor
CurrentMy current role as Section Supervisor, my role is to provide the plan for my distribution & plant team of 12 staff to deliver an electrical work bank to regulations & standards issued. Safety is paramount in the role, ensuring that correct resources and components are planned for each task. My role was to deliver safety hours weekly to allow the team to raise any concerns of problems which would have arisen through the week. We would highlight how could improve safety and if there was any equipment or protocols to improve the delivery of work in a railway environment with passing trains movements.
Acting Distribution & Plant Section Manager
Due to Section Manager moving on in his career, I had the opportunity to step up and lead a team of 40 staff, this was down to implementing plans to deliver work safety complying to regulations and standards. Using and designing risk assessments to ensure optimal safety for my staff. Planning and coordinating teams to deliver work to the highest standard. This role also allowed for experience with HR cases, most prominent would have been dealing with a case where there were alcohol addiction issues raised so we had to provide counselling & an alcohol support program. The role also allowed me to be reviewing training and competency profiles for my staff & managing how I kept the staff competent and identifying areas for mentorship or further training. All regulations & guidance was followed. Network Rail and Electricity at Work regulations change frequently, updated rules and guidelines to be adhered too was also briefed to the team each time it changed. Plan, Deliver & Review was key.
Electrification & Plant Team Leader
On successful application, I was given the opportunity to become an Electrification & Plant Team Leader. Gratefully, I accepted the role and took on the duties of tasking the team’s man management as well as carrying out the planned and reactive maintenance. During this period, I have been able to develop my personal skills such as leadership, communication and my ability to work under pressure. Since the introduction of 019 briefing, the team leader role has allowed me to work closely with management and also the planner during the planning phase of the weeks work to implement safe systems to carry out the maintenance while adhering to Network Rail standards and electrical regulations.
Electrification & Plant Technician
Employed as a Technician, my role was to carry out planned and reactive maintenance to assets of the railway infrastructure which include Electrical Points Heating systems, Standby Generator systems, Uninterruptible Power Supply systems and 650V Signalling supply systems. Other tasks are to maintain and fault find on power supplies to depots, lineside buildings and column lighting. During maintenance or faults I am also tasked with creating safe systems of work for the task at hand as certain circumstances there may be train movements. Setting up the safe systems requires me to lead and be part of a team of people to complete jobs safely, reliably and to a good quality. The role has developed skills such as communication as part of the safe systems of it may be possible to liaise with the on-duty Signaller, technical officers, planner and also managers. Leadership and listening skills have developed through setting up the safe system of work, as a team member may not agree with the system so being approachable is also key for being competent.
Acting Principal Technical Officer
Due to a temporary vacancy arising, I was given the opportunity to cover the role of PTO. This role has enabled to become involved in the planning and fault finding of work within the department. This includes 650V signalling supply fault finding and repair, UPS fault finding and repair, air conditioning fault finding and remote condition monitoring of signal feeder circuits and points heating. All whilst applying the company’s requirements of standards.
Electrification & Plant Apprentice
As the prospect of working on the railway motivated me, I decided to apply for the advance apprenticeship scheme. Gratefully, I was a successful candidate and was chosen as an electrification and plant apprentice (my first choice of the disciplines). First year of the scheme I was tasked to move away to the Navy base HMS Collingwood where I would live for the next eleven months. This was for me to attend HMS Sultan, where I would obtain the first part of my qualifications for my apprenticeship. After a successful first year, I then moved back home and attended Port Talbot Depot where I would achieve work experience and be able to completed my Work Based Learning Objectives and complete my NVQ’s. Following a successful apprenticeship, I was signed off as a qualified and competent electrician in September 2010.Undertaking the apprenticeship helped me develop my team building skills, working with others and working out of a comfort zone. This I feel will be key in my future development as this is what is required to be successful, consistent and reliable team member.
