NGINX Sales Engineers provide technical support to the Sales Executives during pre-sales meetings. They are able to present technical details to enable prospective customers to have confidence in the features and benefits of NGINX’s products and services.I was the first Sales Engineer for NGINX in Europe and helped to educate and grow the team in EMEA by providing training sessions for new hires on the technology and types of customers they would be talking to and how to spot their technical requirements. While the products, team and company were good, they were not a great fit for me. I had expected more creative technical aspects in the sales processes and as a start-up that I’d have more opportunity to impact the growth and development of my team and the region.

Fastly Sales Engineers provide technical pre-sales expertise. They help communicate the features and power of Fastly’s services. They help throughout the sales cycle from initial conversations through to on-boarding, go-live events and as escalation points post-sale. They provide design and implementation of Proofs Of Concept as well as designing the customer’s production deployment.I was the first Sales Engineer for Fastly EMEA after our team specialised from our all encompassing role. I grew the EMEA SE team from just me to three SE’s mentoring and teaching quite differently talented new hires to succeed in the role. I also delivered the first paid for Professional Services Engagements creating a scoping process to help quote for and prevent creep. The customer (Evening Standard / Independent) were so happy they paid repeatedly for my service.I also worked with our Partnerships team as their Sales Engineer helping bring on and build new opportunities. Notably I worked with Magento’s team to help launch Magento Cloud which has rapidly become a leading platform for E-commerce.

When I first joined Fastly, we had an all encompassing role for customer facing engineers. We covered everything from Sales Engineer, Solutions Architect, Documentation, Support (at all levels) as well as some assistance to our engineering teams.During my time as a Customer Engineer, I helped mentor other members of the team to grow into their role and to move around in the company including teaching one of our team to code and who subsequently moved into our Engineering organisation as a professional Software Engineer. I helped decide on policies, write training materials, deliver training to new and existing hires. Some of the processes and policies are still in use in 2020.

RightScale’s Support team was split into two tiers. As a Senior Tech. Support Engineer I was one of three senior engineers around the world and the only one in Europe. We provided deep technical knowledge of various cloud services, architecting applications of all sorts to take advantage of autoscaling. We consulted on complex problems which no-one had solved before. Assessing, testing and advising on best practices for the still new Cloud Services.I was lucky enough to join RightScale early on and help us grow from a 3 person team to 20 people. I got to work with very smart engineers internally and at customers to create brand new solutions. In that time, I helped launch new web applications at a scale which had never been seen. I was able to create functions and features to enable this growth. We had an amazing team at RightScale and I had learned and grown as much as I could and left to look for ways to have a greater influence over product decisions as well as the exhilaration of growing another team and company. I was fortunate enough to be helping one of our customers who referred me into a disruptive start-up in the CDN space.

jetNEXUS were a very small, early stage start-up in the Enterprise Load Balancing space. They built and provided hardware load balancers to companies small and large globally. They also grew into reselling Zeus, Riverbed and other products such as WAF, Storage Area Networks.I joined as the fifth employee of jetNEXUS. At this size my role was very varied. I joined to head up and lead the Technical arm of the business which encompassed the Engineering, consulting and Support functions. As an engineer I was the most skilled linux, systems administration and network engineer at the company. I was part of our Software Engineering team. I lead our project to update the underlying OS from Redhat 9 to CentOS 5 and lead the associated code changes necessary. This involved building and testing a custom linux kernel. Assisting the lead software engineer in updating libraries and our codebase for the major changes between Linux 2.4 and 2.6.I built the first production version of their Wide Area Network Simulator product as a solo project. I originally created this as part of the performance and testing network which I designed, purchased, built and ran as part of my engineering role.
