Passion. What is it to you? For me, it’s being creative. It’s being what I was gifted to be, an artist. While this is at the forefront of my mind now, it hasn’t always been that way. I’ve been on my professional journey since I was 15 years old. Along the way, I have learned much about myself.The last 2 decades of my life have been spent protecting people and property. When I first got into industrial security, it was a job. It became something very fun, educational, enlightening, and life-changing though.It was fun because of the self-awareness that I gained from it. I enjoy the adrenaline you get when responding to an emergency. Being both inside and outside and working in the elements for some is not fun, but I learned for me it is great.A realization that I needed to go to school came when I saw the field was open, but more was required of a candidate. Education took me to Clemson University where I met a professor who changed my life. He taught me the Japanese language and culture but also that I could do anything I was willing to put the diligence into doing. Anything.I took this lesson into the workplace where I had a manager who saw my potential. He allowed me to be a project manager, department manager, emergency manager, write policies, make financial decisions for the department, and be a team leader. He put me in positions that forced me to grow and develop professionally. He did what any good manager does, he developed me and taught me to do the same for my team.This experience and these individuals enlightened me. I learned that I am a people leader, that I am good at it, and that I can learn and be successful wherever I go in life.Today, I have all the skills I need to be successful. When I face challenges, I remember Japanese class. When I have conflicts, I remember managing people and helping others sort through situations. When I feel like I can’t do something, I remember being faced with tasks I had never done and being successful in completing them.Here I am today. I am self-aware, adaptable, educated, dependable, and a great communicator. I am a leader and good at leading people. I am a project manager, a technical writer, a trainer, an emergency manager, a business owner, an author, a graphic designer, an artist, and forever a student. Grateful daily, I look forward to growing professionally and personally.
