I am a journalist, editor, writer and podcast presenter with a particular focus on energy, nuclear power, finance, and the intersection of politics and business. A former Financial Times leader writer & City Editor with a strong interest in history, I set up A Long Time in Finance podcast with my former FT colleague, Neil Collins, in response to a need to understand the history and context of financial and economic stories. On the podcast, we lead discussion with the people closest to the action, whether Black Wednesday or Northern Rock's collapse, and ask the questions which the news-cycle too often ignores when noting parallels. So, for us, it's not just "what happened?" but "what did people on the spot think happened?". Readings and mis-readings of events shape the present: we need to know how.In between two spells at the Financial Times, I co-founded the media start up Breakingviews and worked for Thomson Reuters. My writing has appeared in the FT, Bloomberg, Prospect, the TLS, Independent, Guardian, Times, Spectator.
