Provide cyber security consultation services to infrastructure operations teams. Services include drawing reviews, network data analysis, and recommendations on paths toward a more secure network within the framework of existing operational constraints. This position evolves in a manner such that it does not compete with private industry offerings.
I have two primary roles, that of Principal Investigator and educator. Most of what I do makes use of my engineering past, technical writing and speaking skills as well as critical thinking and logistics for various projects appropriate for a national laboratory. Principal Investigators are the equivalent of project supervisors/managers. I have worked on programs for The Department of Energy Cybersecurity for Energy Delivery Systems (formerly National SCADA Test Bed), Department of Homeland Security ICS-CERT (formerly Control Systems Security Program), Department of Defense Office of the Secretary of Defense, and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Conducted over 35 speaking engagements both foreign and domestic on industrial control system cyber security topics. Institutes and organizations that I have collaborated with include the American Gas Association (AGA), Utilities Telecom Council (UTC), American Water Works Association (AWWA), SANS Institute, Industrial Control Systems Joint Working Group (ICSJWG), Office of the Attorney General of Australia, and Infragard. Audiences ranged in size from a handful to roughly 200. Presentations include being video taped, webinars, video teleconferences, as well as on stage. Plan, conduct, and improve cyber security training used by both The Department of Energy and The Department of Homeland Security ICS-CERT Program.
Emerson is a global company with customers from a significant number of industrial countries. I taught Industrial Automation Software (DeltaV) to a large variety of industries. I trained roughly 2700 people from all over the world. Training classes consisted of 1 week long courses that could be customized for the clients. Training was performed in Austin or at the customer designated locations. New revisions of the software were tested and training material updated prior to their release. The classes I taught were the introduction (7009), administration (7011, 7024), and batch (7016).
I worked for Coherent Technologies and James Mangan Automation. At each one I filled the role of technical sales support and Intellution iFix expert. I designed and built an inventory management system for a terminal facility complete with a leak detection algorithm. I also assisted in the design and configuration of a pipeline management system. As part of each project, I was also responsible for technical training for operations personnel. This led to me being one of 3 people (1 at Intellution, 1 in Australia, and myself) that were certified to train Intellution's iBatch.
The main job I performed was as an instrumentation and control system engineer on capital projects. That entailed generating design drawings, writing specifications for automation and controls, and maintaining the corporate standards. During construction I was responsible for field walk downs and ensuring the computer systems operated the facility as they were intended to be operated. Additionally, I was the main contributor to the global level technology team investigating radar level technologies that resulted in their deployment world wide based on total cost of ownership and their unique capabilities. This technology role expanded to include improving the economics of installing control system equipment. Another side responsibility was to assist with process improvements by being the coordinator and facilitator of week long meetings that resulted in operational changes to improve production. If you note the time frame, this was the run-up to Y2K, an instrument database used globally was earmarked to be turned off by the IT department without regard to the users. I was part of a two person team to implement a new database (INtools) to replace the existing database. This included data migration, data integrity, and remote user experience testing for facilities around the United States and in Europe.
