It was not a typical day when I decided to find a way to use our food system to save the planet. I was sitting in the White House. I was just presented a distinguished award from President Barack Obama, and it struck me that playing by the rules of the game wasn’t going to change how we produce food. At that moment, I began planning to step out of the conventional scientific matrix. So I crowdfunded a farm and a research foundation, propelled by a vision to transform food systems. I became a farmer, rancher, and beekeeper at Blue Dasher Farm; this is a working farm that demonstrates regenerative agriculture. Never have I learned so much so fast. I wasn't raised as a farmer. I was an ecologist, with degrees in entomology from Minnesota and Illinois. The Farm also provides our local community with healthy products like eggs, honey, and meat, plus seeds of crop plants that improve the health of soil, bees and a farmer’s checkbook. At Blue Dasher Farm, I started the Ecdysis Foundation, a scientific hub for regenerative farming research, to catalyze the transformation of food production from the ground up. I founded Ecdysis with the goal of reimagining agriculture using ecological principles, based on independent, farmer-driven research. The revolution in regenerative agriculture cannot occur without reimagining agricultural science. And the work I do, with my team, will make regenerative agriculture a standard for food systems.
