At the forefront of integrating advanced AI in retail, my role at Costco IT encompasses the innovation of NLP systems and the creation of LLM-driven chatbots and NLU systems. With a focus on streamlining processes, I've contributed to the development of a robust multi-tiered PR review system, enhancing our data science code quality and accelerating production deployment. I’ve led our team's collective efforts in MLOps and data lifecycle management have significantly elevated Costco's IT operations, embodying a blend of technical prowess and strategic acumen.I am an experienced Software Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Engineer, and ML engineer with a demonstrated history of working in the retail and InfoSec industries. Focused on pragmatically approaching existing and novel ideas to deliver advanced solutions that are relevant, user friendly, and easy to support or upgrade. Skilled in Linux System Administration, DevOps, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, Hadoop/Spark, Splunk, Python & Java development, Machine Learning (ANNs/RNNs/CNNs), and Public Speaking. Strong engineering and statistical professional with a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from University of Washington Tacoma (focused on Data Science and InfoSec), among several other MS degrees in STEM fields, including one in applied mathematics (with a focus on statistical analysis and stochastic processes). Has expert knowledge in SEIM, ETL/ELT, machine learning, and system/enterprise architecture; as well as broad experience across many aspects of IT. Data science, software engineering, IT, and computer science in general are more than just my chosen field & career, they are my passion and my favorite hobby. Furthermore, while my focus is in data science, software engineering, and architecture, I have a broad array of other IT skills and knowledge. This comes from taking extra time to assist other teams at my company as well as from extensive “experimenting” in my extensive home lab building everything from a Ceph object-store to a Eucalyptus cluster to a Debian HA cluster.

Lead Data ScientistCostco It Sep 2023 - PresentIssaquah, Wa, Us* Led project to create NLP dataflows to do aspect-based sentiment analysis on incoming data. * Wrote a multiple LLM powered chatbots to answer questions regarding the above NLP project, allowing the product safety team to more easily dive into the details of the data. * Wrote a multi-vector, time-decaying vector-DB RAG to consume the most relevant data with multiple encodings to ensure capture of as many aspects of the NLU process as possible * Wrote a custom Langchain retriever to speed up responses by the aforementioned LLM Bot. * Wrote a custom front-end for the chatbot using Chainlit and then Streamlit. Using docker compose scripts, packaged the resulting front end into a docker container for deployment on a Kubernetes cluster. * Currently working to extend the aforementioned chatbot with MMR retrievers, spare retrievers, re-engineering of the prompt with techniques like CoT or PAL, metadata enrichment from the ABSA work described above, structured data retrieval (eg database queries), self-querying retrievers, multi-query retrievers, Contextual compressions, long-context reordering, and multi-prompt retrievers. * Leading member of department-wide technical review board that approves all production changes. * Developed framework, processes, and templates for PII/PHI handling in Spark pipelines feeding our Delta Lake in DataBricks * Led work on the Data Science and ML side for the legal and compliance review of the previously mentioned PII work. Also co-leading the stand-up of a data science governance board. * Designed and then led migration to new storage accounts across all 5 environments and multiple data classifications. The design of the storage accounts was to segregate data into storage accounts based on its classification (PII/PHI/PCI/etc). -
Lead Machine Learning EngineerCostco It Sep 2023 - PresentIssaquah, Wa, Us* Leading member of department-wide technical review board that approves all production changes. * Developing training materials for other Data Scientists; specifically, with respect to SDE best practices, full Data Science Lifecycle requirements (EDA to Model monitoring), coding style standards, git usage, CI/CD & MLOps, Pull Request review process, and deployment process & standards – reduced PR rejections by almost 50% (see below) * Stood up multi-tiered PR review process that must be followed for all Data Science code moving to production – reduced production deployment work by factor of 3 * Developed framework, processes, and templates for PII/PHI handling in Spark pipelines feeding our Delta Lake in DataBricks – saved us from having to buy a $3 million/year tool – invited to present this at the 2024 Databricks Data and AI Summit * Led work on the Data Science and ML side for the legal and compliance review of the previously mentioned PII work. Also co-leading the stand-up of a data science governance board. * Developed a complete MLOps framework, infrastructure, tooling, and process for deploy machine learning models to production. This leveraged Azure DataBricks, Azure Data Factory, and Azure DevOps, and included configuring repository management, setting up automated test frameworks, devising & documenting processes, and creating deployment pipelines for both model, feature engineering, & ETL code.- Helped lead the creation of Costco’s data science center of excellence as part of the its leadership team as well as as lead machine learning engineer. This included everything from developing processes & procedures, to designing architecture, to deploying infrastructure, to writing ETL & MLOps pipeline code, to review & approval of all code being deployed to production. -
