Undergraduate Research Assistant
I was employed at the Pegasus Toroidal Experiment at UW-Madison. The project I was involved in was called a Thomson Scattering Diagnostic, which utilized physical principles to obtain data about the plasmas we were creating, and in turn calculate the electron temperature and density of the plasma. Throughout my two years at Pegasus, our project went from the design stage to the implementation phase. Our budget was $250,000 for a project that typically ran into the millions; in order to make it work, we diverged significantly from the standard design paradigm. We reduced the cost 10-fold of certain components by making use of the increased sensitivity and throughput of novel CCD camera and volume phase holographic gratings (respectively). The system we designed had comparable data collection capabilities to traditional diagnostics, at a fraction of the cost; my proposal of this configuration led to breakthrough cost-savings and allowed us to complete the project within budget.Aside from design work, I created software that analyzed the CCD images captured and translated that into meaningful data. This was a significant undertaking; to accomplish the task, the integration of software development, knowledge of plasma physics, and the utilization of engineering principles was necessary. In addition to the experiences above, I also had the opportunity to operate the machine (a multimillion dollar instrument), perform routine maintenance, install new diagnostic components, fabricate parts using CNC milling, and construct electronics. Overall, I gained skills in engineering and software design, development, and implementation, as well as hands-on mechanical experience at Pegasus.
Engineering Intern
I participated in a new program seeking to give college students real world experience by partnering with local industry, bridging the gap between knowledge and practical skills• Some of my responsibilities included:-Efficiently revised or updated over 500 CAD drawings independently-Helped construct and approve recently developed fan housing prototypes-Gained understanding of engineering management and product development-Developed CAD skills (IronCAD)At the end of my internship I received a letter of recommendation from Neil Werner, who was at the time my supervisor and manager of the Tempered Air Products division at Greenheck.
